Engineer

Huxley Bertram are looking for engineers, at either engineer level or junior engineer level, who will work with Senior Engineers on projects to support the design, build and commissioning of equipment for clients. The work is spread over mechanical, electrical and control engineering while the types of machines vary across applications and industries. Working at Huxley Bertram is often described as: “being in an engineer’s playground”.

Engineers will have experience and responsibility on projects, with plenty of scope for more learning and development. They will have a degree or equivalent qualification in engineering and are very capable individuals with a willingness to learn.  All our engineers have a high interest in automation, product handling and special purpose machinery, and, in general, thoroughly enjoy engineering.

This position will ideally suit an engineer who can design using 3D CAD (Solidworks). The role includes hands-on work and may involve travel in the UK and maybe overseas.  An understanding of electrical control systems and an interest in PLC programming is desirable; as is a positive attitude, a flexible approach to problem-solving and the ability to communicate at all levels.

The Engineer Role

  • Working closely with the Senior Engineers on a variety of projects.
  • Liaising with others in the design team, other departments, clients and contractors.
  • Reading and understanding design specifications and technical drawings.
  • Preparing and monitoring project schedules.
  • Designing and detailing systems and products using 3D CAD (Solidworks).
  • Developing test rigs and prototype equipment.
  • Assisting with production build.
  • Commissioning and Acceptance Testing the final product or system.
  • Researching suitable solutions and estimating costs and timescales.
  • Understanding and working to BS and EN standards, Machinery Directive and CE regulations.
  • Preparing product documentation.
  • Procuring parts and monitoring costs and budgets

Candidates: Experience will vary between engineers

As a guide the right candidate will have:

  • A degree in engineering or equivalent qualification in an engineering field.
  • Experience in automation, product handling, or special purpose machinery in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • A good knowledge of 3D CAD and 2D Engineering drawings (Solidworks or similar).
  • A structured and organised approach to manage projects.
  • An understanding of electrical control systems.
  • Capability in PLC programming would be advantageous, but not essential.
  • Willingness and capability to travel both nationally and internationally.
  • A full driving licence

Location

Huxley Bertram machines are used all over the world. Most of the engineering and junior engineering is conducted in the Waterbeach facility, near Cambridge, UK. There is sometimes a need to travel to clients’ sites to understand requirements and or conduct commissioning or machine maintenance.

Package: The expected remuneration is as follows:

  • Salary: £25,000 to £50,000 subject to experience, plus discretionary bonus & benefits below.
  • Flexible working hours (Mon-Fri): 40 hours per week, core time 0930 to 1530.
