RoleThe post holder will be part of a team responsible for maintaining and managing the formal gardens and landscape of the estate, ensuring a comprehensive maintenance service is provided. You will typically work 37 hours per week, from 07:30 to 16:00 Monday to Thursday and 07:30 to 13:30 on Friday (following a rota), with a one-hour unpaid lunch break.Responsibilities

  • Provide seasonal maintenance of the estate in accordance with the programme of works as directed by the Head Gardener and developed from the management plan.
  • Tasks include (but are not limited to) grass cutting, weeding, planting, watering, leaf collecting, and hedge cutting.
  • Use and maintain a range of garden and grounds machinery (e.g., ride-on, walk-behind mowers, tractors, etc.) as necessary and undertake specialist training where required.
  • Perform formative and rejuvenative maintenance of deciduous and evergreen trees, shrubs, climbers, and hedges.
  • Support line management in maintaining health and safety in the grounds and gardens to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.
  • Maintain hard landscaped areas, roads, and pathways.
  • Train for the appropriate, timely, and safe use of pesticides and other forms of pest control (e.g., moles and rabbits).
  • Assist in the recording and labelling of the plant collection.
  • General estate maintenance, including trees, fencing, and conservation.
  • Assist the Estates Team with waste collection as needed.
  • During the winter months (November - March), the post-holder will be required to be on-call to respond to adverse weather conditions. Duties while on call include snow clearing and salting/gritting on paths, car parks, roads, and building access areas as needed.
  • Carry out any other reasonable management requests.

This list is not exhaustive, and the successful candidate would be expected to undertake reasonable additional duties in support of site operations as required.Education and Qualifications (preffered)

  • City & Guilds/NVQ or equivalent qualification in Horticulture.
  • P.A.1 / P.A.6 Spraying.

Experience

  • Previous experience working as a Gardener.
  • Experience using garden machinery (e.g., driving ride-on mowers, using strimmers, walk-behind mowers, driving tractors).
  • Experience using larger estate machinery (e.g., driving tractors).

Skills and Abilities

  • An appreciation and commitment to Health and Safety.
  • Able to comprehend and communicate in English to a level appropriate for the position.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with staff at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Able to prioritize tasks, especially in the absence of the Head Gardener.
