Teaching Assistant - Autism Support

We are looking for a compassionate and skilled Teaching Assistant to provide dedicated support for a child with Autism in a Key Stage 1 (KS1) classroom. This role is crucial in facilitating an inclusive and supportive learning environment, tailored to the child’s unique needs.

Day to day of the role:

  • Provide one-to-one support to a child with Autism, ensuring they are engaged and making progress in their learning.
  • Collaborate with the lead teacher to implement individual education plans (IEPs) and adapt teaching methods to support the child’s learning and development.
  • Use a variety of strategies, including visual aids and structured routines, to enhance communication and understanding.
  • Assist with the development of social skills by encouraging positive interactions with peers.
  • Monitor the child’s behaviour and use appropriate interventions to manage sensory overload or other challenges.
  • Maintain regular communication with the child’s parents or guardians, providing updates on progress and collaborating on strategies to support learning at home.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with children with Autism or special educational needs, particularly in a KS1 setting.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by children with Autism and knowledge of strategies to support their learning and development.
  • Patience, empathy, and a commitment to creating a positive and supportive learning environment.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals.
  • A proactive and flexible approach to adapt to the child’s needs throughout the school day.
  • Relevant qualifications in education, special needs support, or a related field are highly desirable.
