Sports Coach (Basketball)

Location: Cambridge

Salary: Competitive (Depending on experience and qualifications)

Hours: Full-time position, term time only (35 weeks) and the normal hours of work will be from 8.45am until 4.45pm; however these times will vary according to the timetable and are subject to change.

The School is looking to appoint a Sports Coach to work at the Upper School, starting in September 2024. The candidate would ideally have significant experience of playing or coaching Basketball, and some experience in our other focus sports of Rugby, Cricket and Tennis. The successful candidate will be joining at a time when we will have opened our new six-lane 25m swimming pool, additional sports hall and climbing wall to add to the already excellent sports facilities on site and at our Abington Playing Fields.

The Role

The Sports Coach is accountable to the Bursar, but day-to-day line management will be overseen by the Director of Sport.

The responsibilities of the post holder will vary depending on the demands of the school. The following provides an overview of areas of responsibility, although these will be subject to discussion with the successful candidate:

  • Coaching basketball throughout the school in a manner appropriate to children’s ages and abilities
  • Taking responsibility for the basketball programme and teams across the school
  • Developing and sharing teaching and learning resources
  • Monitoring the progress of pupils, including those with specific learning needs
  • Maintaining professional skills through INSET and our Professional Development programme
  • Ensuring that activities and events are suitably staffed, resourced, and compliant with Health and Safety regulations and agreed school policies
  • Striking a balance between the provision of high-quality sport for all and the achievement of excellence for some
  • Instilling a sense of commitment and enthusiasm for sport, balancing the role modelling of sporting etiquette with the development of skills and competitive action
  • Attending, coaching and officiating school fixtures – some of which will be at the weekend
  • Monitoring and reviewing the progress of pupils – identifying pupils that need support and enrichment whilst looking for opportunities to ensure that all children can develop their needs within a sport

Skills and Qualifications

  • Track record of coaching excellence and strong subject knowledge in basketball. A relevant and recent coaching qualification, or the commitment to attend relevant professional development is desirable
  • Genuine passion for working with and coaching young people
  • Demonstrates high standards of behaviour and is able to model the School values (intellectual curiosity and scholarship, endeavour, breadth and balance, and valuing one another and the environment)
  • Proven communication and interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to work independently and use initiative
  • High order administrative skills, effectively manages commitments and deadlines
  • ICT competence and willingness to learn and use new technologies
  • Works collaboratively and supportively with colleagues
  • Respects and values the different experiences, ideas and backgrounds others can bring to work and to teams
  • Emotional resilience to cope with and learn from challenging situations.
