Underwriting Lead - Commercial 

Location: South Wales - Hybrid 

Circa £40k 

MERJE is seeking a dynamic 1st line underwriting lead for a leading financial services company. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead a newly formed commercial underwriting team, driving growth and innovation in the SME market. The ideal candidate will combine technical expertise with strong leadership skills to deliver exceptional service to customers and brokers.

The Role

The 1st line underwriting lead will spearhead a team providing first-class broker partner engagement and technical underwriting support. This role offers the chance to shape the success of a growing team, drive digital innovation, and contribute to the company's expansion strategy.

Key Responsibilities of the 1st line underwriting lead:

  • Lead and develop a team of underwriters to meet service targets and ensure exceptional customer outcomes
  • Drive innovation in service delivery through digital and automation opportunities
  • Analyse underwriting data to inform decision-making and improve processes
  • Collaborate with the Governance Team to ensure compliance with internal and regulatory requirements
  • Manage relationships with internal teams and external partners effectively

Required knowledge and experience for the 1st line underwriting lead role:

  • Proven experience in underwriting, with a solid understanding of risk assessment and insurance principles
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and a proactive, hands-on approach
  • Relevant professional qualifications (e.g., Cert CII, Diploma in Insurance)
  • Proficiency in using various Policy Administration Systems (PAS) or underwriting technology
