Key Responsibilities of a Phonics Intervention Buddy:

  • Deliver structured phonics interventions on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, ensuring pupils receive tailored support to improve their reading and phonics skills.
  • Use evidence-based phonics schemes (e.g., Read Write Inc., Letters and Sounds, Jolly Phonics) to support students in their literacy development.
  • Work closely with class teachers and SENCOs to track pupil progress and adjust interventions accordingly.
  • Foster a positive and encouraging learning environment, boosting students’ confidence and motivation in phonics and reading.
  • Support students with additional learning needs, ensuring they have access to phonics interventions suited to their abilities.
  • Assist in creating phonics resources and engaging activities that support early reading skills.

The Ideal Phonics Intervention Buddy Will Have:

  • Experience supporting phonics interventions within a primary school setting.
  • A strong understanding of phonics programs and early literacy development.
  • A passion for helping children develop their reading skills and confidence.
  • Excellent communication skills to engage with children, teachers, and parents.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive, can-do attitude.
  • A Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (desirable but not essential).
