Job Purpose:Lead the site maintenance team, plan and assign tasks, and participate in the inspection, service, repair, and maintenance of mechanical and electrical equipment at the Chelmsford campuses. Contribute to staff recruitment, resolve employment issues, manage expenses, overtime, and annual leave. Liaise between teams, engineers, and contractors to evaluate asset complications and provide recommendations for improvements.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Oversee the site maintenance team, ensuring safety and compliance standards are met.
  2. Inspect, maintain, install, modify, or repair campus electrical and mechanical equipment.
  3. Deliver and review statutory inspections.
  4. Ensure operational assets are accurately registered and have the correct maintenance program.
  5. Perform planned and reactive maintenance on various systems and equipment.
  6. Provide specialist technical advice and contribute to maintenance plans.
  7. Complete operational reports, including faults or failings.
  8. Provide training support for colleagues and technical trainees.
  9. Occasionally work overtime in emergencies and participate in an out-of-hours on-call rota.
  10. Work closely with university staff, colleagues, and suppliers, exhibiting strong leadership skills.
  11. Ensure compliance with Health and Safety policy.
  12. Maintain effective liaison and collaboration with other teams within Estates and Facilities.
  13. A valid driving license is required to support other campuses.
  14. Comply with Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR requirements.
  15. Perform other duties as required, commensurate with your grade.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications:

  • BTEC or equivalent qualifications in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • Relevant technical hands-on field experience in maintenance, diagnostic, and investigation of specialist mechanical/electrical faults

Desirable Qualifications:

  • HNC in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • ACOP Refrigeration Qualification
  • Gas Safe Certificate

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Prior knowledge of systems, equipment, processes, and procedures
  • Ability to motivate teams to drive performance and positivity
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills
  • IT literate with sound knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Understanding of Health and Safety compliance
