About the Role

Houghton & Son Ltd is seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join our dynamic team at our head office in Sandon, Essex. The successful candidate will work closely with our directors and management team on a variety of projects, including historically significant buildings and collaborations with housing associations for refurbishments, refittings, and renovations.

You will be part of a close-knit team of seasoned professionals, managing the full estimating process from initial enquiries to tender adjudication and submittal. Your role will involve direct interaction with clients and engineers, requiring proficiency in estimating from first principles, and producing Bills of Quantities and Schedules of Work. A strong background in the construction industry with knowledge of D& B contracts and NEC Contracts, excellent problem-solving capabilities, and outstanding communication and interpersonal skills are essential. Familiarity with domestic works and housing associations is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide commercial support on live contracts as needed, including pricing variations, preparing valuations, and assisting with subcontract procurement.
  • Producing final accounts and reconciliation for each client
  • Client liaising and maintaining communication
  • Extract information from drawings and tender documents to calculate costs for materials, plant, labour, and sub-contract packages in line with agreed programmes of work and procurement schedules.
  • Prepare tenders for adjudication with directors.
  • Obtain quotes from sub-contractors and suppliers.
  • Perform site surveys and meet with stakeholders.
  • Analyse project plans and specifications.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of three years experience in a similar role, preferably within the construction industry.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • Strong IT skills, with the ability to manage documentation and reporting systems efficiently.
  • Punctual, reliable, and able to meet strict deadlines.
