The Burford Recruitment Company is delighted to work on behalf of a prestigious private estate, seeking a Deputy Head Gardener to assist the Head Gardener and Parkland in leading the team. This role requires a knowledgeable and hands-on approach to ensure the gardens reach their full potential, meeting the high expectations of the principals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the Head of Gardens and Parkland to ensure the garden and walled garden are developed and maintained impeccably.
  • Take a hands-on approach in leading the garden team, ensuring effective and professional work standards.
  • Oversee the line management of all garden staff, including planning rotas, holidays, and shifts.
  • Work with the Head of Gardens and Parkland on project planning and execution.
  • Manage contractors working within the gardens to maintain aesthetic standards.
  • Uphold all health & safety regulations and ensure compliance among team members.
  • Oversee the purchasing of materials and uniforms, and ensure all equipment is properly maintained.
  • Prune and maintain a variety of plants, manage soil and bed preparation, and oversee pest control.
  • To maintain cleanliness, manage watering schedules, and handle general plant care in the greenhouse and nursery.
  • Maintain paths, roads, garden structures, and water features.
  • Ensure the proper use and maintenance of garden machinery and tools.
Skills & Attributes
  • Relevant horticultural qualifications (RHS Level 2 or equivalent)
  • Professional gardening experience, preferably in a large private garden
  • Comprehensive knowledge of garden design, hard landscaping, and machinery operation
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Attention to detail and strong communication skills
  • Flexibility and the ability to work under pressure
  • Passion for horticulture and a confident, positive attitude
Desirable
  • Knowledge of floristry, cut flowers, houseplants, and orchids
  • Greenhouse cultivation experience
  • Health and safety qualification
  • PA1 and PA6 certification
