We’re looking for an R&D Process Safety Manager. Based at our Capenhurst site. you’ll play an important role within the R&D function, leading and supporting the design of new high hazard technology, ensuring delivery of a practical safe design and a logical safety case is a complex task.
The R&D Process Development Team develop designs for new applications and processes. As these can involve high hazard chemicals and challenging process conditions, an excellent all round understanding of how this impacts Process Safety and Licensing is essential.
The team works within a highly regulated environment and must therefore work to strict quality, safety and environmental standards.
The team need to develop an understanding of complex equipment and processes, enlist specialist support, as required, and turn this understanding into practical design / safe solutions.

What you’ll do:
- Oversee development of Process Safety capability to support R&D projects
- Lead a small team of 1-3 process hazards safety and safety case nuclear professionals
- Develop network of Specialist Engineering Suppliers (relating to Process Safety and Safety Case) to expand internal discipline capability
- Lead the resolution of complex Process Safety or licencing challenges to provide practical solutions for critical and/or novel plant equipment and systems
- Develop Urenco R&Ds approach Process Safety and Licencing to ensure regulatory compliance
- Support the Project Delivery team to define and implement design and engineering initiatives that align with the development stage of R&D projects and ultimately support the efficient transfer of projects to the Group Projects
- Many of the processes are highly technical, new to Urenco and involve high hazard chemicals sometimes at extreme conditions. As such, the Job Holder must therefore develop an understanding of the underlying principles and uncertainties in order to ensure a safe design and support the delivery of a fit for purpose Safety Case.
- Ensure compliance with relevant regulations eg. Nuclear site licence conditions, COMAH
- Improve delivery of safe designs, ensuring the full range of operating modes are considered, safety case documents are easy to maintain and basis of safety is clear
What do you need to thrive in this role?
- Knowledge of engineering standards eg. Safety Assessment Handbook, EPSHEG8, IEC61508 and IEC61511 (or equivalents in the relevant jurisdiction).
- Team development and continuous improvement Continuing improvements in team performance for: design development, safety case development, project delivery and ultimately periodic safety case review process and improvement actions
- Chartered Engineer with wide ranging experience
- Significant experience with a chemical/nuclear background.
- Broad exposure to working in a highly regulated environment on either a top tier COMAH or nuclear site
- Experienced process safety assessment practitioner.
- Broad experience of process technologies and equipment.
- Significant experience of multi-disciplined team working and the parts played by the various engineering and other disciplines
- Knowledge of current legislation and Regulatory expectations
- Knowledge of project lifecycle and safety case assessment requirements
- Delivery of detailed nuclear safety case assessments
- Knowledge of other disciplines (criticality, shielding, human factors)
- Strong communication skills and ability to adapt communication style and content to suit audience
- Ability to work with technical experts and plant operating teams across all levels of the organisation
- Approach to work consistent with operating in a highly regulated environment
- Extensive knowledge of design standards, change management and safety assessment techniques
- Ability to prioritise workloads effectively to meet challenging targets.
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of relevant security, health, safety, environmental and regulatory requirements
- Strong problem solving/trouble-shooting skills across the full engineering spectrum.
- Detailed knowledge of the Health & Safety Executive’s permissioning regime
- Knowledge of the principles of Nuclear Licensed Site regulation
