Role Overview:
As an SEMH Primary Teaching Assistant (TA), you will work closely with children who have a range of complex needs, including SEMH, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and those affected by trauma. Your role will involve supporting the class teacher and SENCO to implement tailored strategies and interventions designed to help these children thrive academically, socially and emotionally. You will create a safe, nurturing and structured environment in which these children can overcome their challenges and reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
- Assist in developing and delivering tailored resources and activities that cater to the specific needs of children with SEMH, ADHD, ASD and trauma.
- Implement individualised learning and behaviour plans in collaboration with the SENCO and class teacher.
- Support students in managing their emotions and developing positive coping strategies.
- Foster a nurturing and structured environment to promote confidence and engagement in learning.
- Assist in delivering interventions focused on emotional well-being, social skills and self-regulation.
- Encourage positive interactions and relationships between pupils and staff.
- Support classroom activities, ensuring that learning is accessible and inclusive.
- Monitor and record pupil progress, providing feedback to teachers and support staff.
Requirements:
- Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant (TA), particularly with children exhibiting SEMH needs, ASD, ADHD, or trauma.
- A strong understanding of the challenges faced by children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.
- Must be a driver and have business insurance, as travel may be required for this role.
- Ability to engage with children in a positive, nurturing and patient manner, building rapport and trust.
- A relevant qualification such as a Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent, or an appropriate qualification in SEN.
- Experience working with children with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours.
- A calm, resilient and empathetic approach, with a strong commitment to supporting the well-being and development of vulnerable children.
- Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
