GSL Education are currently seeking an experienced Secondary SEMH Maths Teacher for a rewarding opportunity at a school in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching mathematics to secondary-aged students who face mental health challenges, learning disabilities, ASD, ADHD and trauma. About the Role:

As the Secondary SEMH Maths Teacher, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high-quality mathematics education to students with SEMH, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and those impacted by trauma. You will be responsible for creating an inclusive, supportive classroom environment where students can engage with the subject and build their academic and life skills. The role will involve tailoring your teaching methods to accommodate the unique needs of each student, ensuring that they can overcome barriers to learning and develop confidence in their abilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated Maths lessons to secondary students with SEMH, ASD, ADHD and trauma-related needs.
  • Develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for students, ensuring that their specific needs are met.
  • Adapt teaching strategies and resources to cater to the diverse learning needs of students, creating an inclusive environment.
  • Provide consistent and positive behavioural management, fostering an atmosphere of respect and engagement in the classroom.
  • Support students in building self-regulation, problem-solving and social skills alongside academic progress.
  • Monitor and assess student progress, providing regular feedback and adapting teaching methods accordingly.
  • Work closely with the SENCO, pastoral team and other staff to provide holistic support for students' social, emotional and academic development.
  • Engage with parents and carers to ensure effective communication and understanding of students' progress and needs.

Secondary SEMH Maths Teacher requirements:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is a must.
  • A degree in Mathematics or a closely related subject.
  • Experience teaching Maths at the secondary level, ideally within an SEMH or special educational needs environment.
  • A strong understanding of the challenges faced by students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health difficulties, as well as those with learning disabilities, ASD, ADHD and trauma.
  • Excellent subject knowledge and a deep understanding of the mathematics curriculum.
  • Must be a driver and able to obtain business insurance as the role may require travel between settings.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to build rapport with students, staff and parents.
  • A proactive and adaptable approach, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the update service (or be willing to apply for one).
