About the Role: We are looking for a compassionate and skilled Coroner's Referral Officer to join the team at West Sussex County Council, based at County Hall North, Horsham. This role is ideal for individuals with coronial, police, or investigative experience, or anyone with strong administrative skills who is comfortable handling sensitive situations.

In this role, you will be responsible for recording sudden and unexpected deaths in accordance with the Coroner's and Justice Act 2009, along with other relevant legislation. You will work directly with HM Senior and Area Coroners, bereaved families, and various third-party agencies, ensuring clear communication and appropriate support throughout the process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle inbound/outbound calls from families, GPs, medical professionals, and funeral directors.
  • Record and update referrals into the line of business system.
  • Manage a busy inbox, ensuring cases are tracked and updated accordingly.
  • Provide empathetic support to bereaved families while adhering to policy and procedure.
  • Act professionally when discharging designated powers as directed by the Coroner.

Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience within a coronial, police, or investigative setting is highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, especially when delivering sensitive information.
  • Excellent administrative skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to remain empathetic while working in a professional and legal capacity.
  • Enhanced DBS check required.

Working Hours and Location:

  • Full-time, 37 hours per week.
  • Monday to Friday, 09:00 - 17:30.
  • In-office role based at County Hall North, Horsham.
