The School and Role

An Alternative Provision school based in Christchurch are currently seeking 1-1 Teaching Assistants to start in September 2024. The school caters for primary and secondary pupils aged 6 - 16 years with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs, ASD, and various other needs including trauma, school phobia Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) and Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD). All learners have an Educational, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). 

The successful Support Assistant will be required to work 1-1 with pupils, assisting them academically as well as overcoming barriers to learning and supporting them emotionally. You will play a crucial role in supporting the educational and emotional development of a child with special needs or challenging behaviour. Working closely with the class teacher and special educational needs coordinator (SENCO), you will create a positive and inclusive learning environment tailored to the individual needs of the student.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-to-one support to a specific student, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.
  • Collaborate with the class teacher and SENCO to adapt teaching materials and methods to meet the unique needs of the student.
  • Foster a nurturing and supportive relationship with the student to enhance their social and emotional well-being.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Experience working with children with special needs or challenging behaviour.
  • Understanding of various learning styles and the ability to adapt teaching methods accordingly.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Patience, resilience, and a genuine passion for supporting the educational journey of every child.
