Responsible To: Home Manager

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Deputy Manager to join our team. The successful candidate will assist the Home Manager in achieving the aims and objectives of the Statement of Purpose, deputise in their absence, and support and manage staff to meet the needs of children and young people. This role involves direct work with children, managing child protection concerns, and working in partnership with other professionals to achieve the best outcomes for young people.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure each young person has an allocated key worker and that staff are aware of their responsibilities.
  • Attend childcare reviews and planning meetings.
  • Undertake direct work with young people and act as an appropriate role model.
  • Develop systems for consulting young people about the quality of care they receive.
  • Maintain accurate written records and work in partnership with parents, carers, and other professionals.
  • Chair children’s meetings and facilitate consultations with young people.
  • Provide managerial control and direction to staff, assist with recruitment and retention, and supervise new starters.
  • Plan shifts and ensure smooth running when on duty.
  • Offer 1:1 supervision to staff and identify training and development needs.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels and effective budget management.
  • Monitor the fabric of the building and take remedial action where necessary.
  • Develop routines in consultation with young people and staff, and ensure the home is maintained in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Attend to all administration issues and provide weekly management information reports.

Essential:

  • Secondary Education with good literacy and numeracy skills.
  • NVQ 3 in Caring for Children and Young People (or equivalent).
  • Working towards NVQ Level 5 in Leadership and Management.
  • Current driving license.

Desirable:

  • Management qualification.
  • NVQ Level 4.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Awareness of Equal Opportunities/ADP issues.
  • Knowledge of the Children Act and other relevant legislation.
  • Team building and supervision skills.
  • Ability to manage teams effectively and communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Understanding the needs of BESD children and managing challenging behaviour.
  • In-depth knowledge of Children’s Home Regulations and Quality Standards.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to motivate and enthuse staff.

Experience:

  • 1 year of relevant supervisory experience.
  • 12 months of experience working in a residential setting with young people with challenging behaviour.

General Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Registered Manager in implementing the Statement of Purpose.
  • Contribute to service improvements and staff development.
  • Drive company vehicles as required.
  • Work on a rota basis according to the needs of young people.
  • Ensure resources are allocated appropriately and financial records are maintained accurately.
  • Receive supervision in line with National Minimum Standards and take responsibility for personal development.
