Our client, one of the UK’s leading civil engineering contractors, is seeking to appoint an experienced Commercial Operations Director of Civil Engineering to join their Commercial team based in North Lanarkshire.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Operations Director, this role plays a pivotal role within the Senior Leadership Team in the Commercial Department. In this position, you will provide strategic direction, manage the commercial function through strong leadership, and ensure business objectives are effectively achieved.

  • Manage, direct, and lead a team in delivering the commercial aspects of multiple projects, ranging in value from £5m to £200m, ensuring compliance with contract requirements, adherence to budget, and alignment with company policies.

  • Identify key risks and opportunities, providing insights that inform decision-making and drive actions to safeguard and enhance the commercial success of projects.

  • Take a leading role in high-level negotiations with principal stakeholders, ensuring that expectations are effectively managed and met.

  • As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, champion and facilitate continuous improvements in commercial processes, business practices, and policies.

  • Collaborate with HR to foster a culture of continuous improvement, transparency, and strong employee relations, aligning with the company’s core values.

  • Lead on both formal and informal project disputes, serving as a key decision-maker and engaging external legal advisors and specialists where necessary.

  • Provide monthly financial performance reports and project status updates.

  • Ensure teams implement the commercial strategy in accordance with company standard operating procedures and within authorised parameters.

  • Maintain close engagement with the Pre-Construction department to facilitate ongoing learning, feedback, and seamless commercial information transfer from inception to project completion.

  • Uphold and promote company values in all interactions with employees, clients, subcontractors, and external contacts.

  • Demonstrate best practice and innovation in line with company values when engaging with stakeholders.

  • Work closely with Operations Directors to ensure projects are adequately serviced, addressing any key delivery issues that may impact commercial outcomes.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • A self-motivated professional with a proven track record in civil engineering and/or construction projects.

  • Degree-level industry-recognised qualifications.

  • Experience leading multiple teams across a range of projects.

Desirable:

  • Experience within Civil Engineering, Rail, Infrastructure, and Flood Prevention sectors.

Experience

  • Previous experience in a similar leadership role.

  • Proficiency in working with various forms of construction contracts, including JCT, NEC, FIDIC, and bespoke agreements.

  • Understanding of two-stage, single-stage, and negotiated tendering processes.

  • Experience handling formal disputes, including adjudications.

  • Strong communication skills, with confidence engaging with colleagues, board members, and senior management.

  • A commercially astute approach with a keen eye for detail.

  • Ability to meet tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities effectively.

  • A flexible and adaptable approach to work.

  • A strong team ethos and leadership capability.

  • Effective presentation skills.

  • Demonstrable experience in people management.
