The Opportunity

A market-leading land promoter is seeking an experienced Planning Director to join their Planning & Projects team. This is an exciting opportunity to lead on the promotion of major and strategic sites, working through the development plan process, planning applications, and planning appeals where necessary. The role involves leading planning strategies, managing project teams, and supporting the professional growth of junior planners within the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement effective planning strategies for the development and consent of sites.
  • Lead project teams and sign off planning reports for applications, appeals, and policy presentations.
  • Provide strategic planning advice to senior management and key stakeholders.
  • Manage and progress sites through the planning process in a timely manner.
  • Mentor and support junior planners, delegating tasks appropriately.
  • Prepare well-researched reports to support site promotion and planning applications.
  • Submit written evidence to planning appeals and examinations in public, providing verbal evidence where required.
  • Instruct and negotiate Section 106 agreements, ensuring compliance with legal and commercial obligations.
  • Identify new land opportunities in collaboration with the Land team.
  • Attend meetings with landowners and agents to secure new development sites.
  • Undertake public engagement, including formal consultation events.
  • Line management responsibilities for Planners and Senior Planners, supporting their professional development.

About You

  • Degree in Planning or a related qualification, with eligibility for RTPI membership.
  • Extensive experience in planning, either in a consultancy or local authority environment.
  • Proven experience in promoting sites through the development plan and planning application process.
  • Strong knowledge of Section 106 agreements and negotiation processes.
  • Experience in preparing planning reports and research projects to support site promotion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage with various audiences.
  • Strong leadership, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
