Chemistry Technician

Role Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and proactive Chemistry Technician to join our Battery Materials Laboratory team. This role involves sample preparation and the operation of specialised analytical equipment, including GC-MS, to support a wide range of projects. The successful candidate will maintain laboratory workflows, adhere to strict safety standards, and contribute to the smooth operation of analytical processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare calibration and test samples from battery cell components using fume hoods, gloveboxes, pipettes, balances, and microwave digesters.
  • Operate the Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) instrument, ensuring accurate and reliable results.
  • Support laboratory safety by following COSHH guidelines, maintaining risk assessments, and adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Use workflow and instrument software to manage sample analysis, create accurate records, and generate basic reports using PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Collaborate with chemists to ensure a safe and efficient laboratory workflow.
  • Potentially operate additional instruments such as ICP-OES, TGA, DSC, XRD, or XPS, with training provided where necessary.

Skills Required:

  • Proficiency in practical chemistry techniques, including sample preparation, use of analytical balances, and pipetting.
  • Experience operating GC-MS instruments.
  • Competence in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint for data management and reporting.

Experience Required:

  • HND or Degree in Chemistry or a related science, OR significant laboratory experience.
  • Practical experience with liquid sample preparation and safe laboratory practices.

Experience Preferred:

  • Ability to interpret chromatograms, identify issues, and analyse data.
  • Experience with instruments such as ICP-OES, TGA, or DSC is advantageous.
