Field Service Engineer

Sussex

The Field Service Engineer (FSE) role provides field support to customers worldwide, ensuring the stable operation of hardware and software products, including fire control systems, naval electro-optical surveillance systems, and land/vehicle surveillance systems. This involves installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing various products and systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform offsite repairs on products and systems.
  • Install new products at customer sites.
  • Provide after-sales support and servicing.
  • Generate post-site visit reports with clear analysis and recommendations.
  • Conduct strip-down, survey, repair, and testing of customer repair returns.
  • Support sales teams in demos and trials for customers.
  • Prepare demo/trial equipment for sales activities.
  • Test and evaluate potential new equipment, sensors, and cameras in collaboration with sales and engineering teams.
  • Prepare risk assessments and safe systems of work (SSOW) for installation/commissioning activities.
  • Lead in-house Factory Acceptance Testing (FATs) and other customer-related activities as required.
  • Identify and support continuous improvement initiatives within customer services.

Skills & Experience

Essential

  • Experience in complex systems maintenance, including electrical and mechanical assembly tools, within military environments such as naval, army, or air force operations.
  • Knowledge of electronics, including microcontrollers, and an understanding of basic control theory, servo tuning, radar, optics, and communications systems.
  • Competent in mechanical and electro-mechanical skills.
  • Strong understanding and proficiency in electrical, mechanical, PC architecture, and software-related problem diagnosis, including software loading, updates, and IP networking.
  • Excellent commercial, relationship management, and communication skills when interacting with key stakeholders and customers, particularly on-site.
  • Ability to work in exposed or adverse conditions on land and sea, including working at heights and handling heavy equipment.
  • Willingness to travel worldwide at short notice and work extended hours as necessary.

Desirable

  • Clean driving license with class C1 for operating test vehicles.
  • Experience in preparing and delivering customer-facing maintenance and operator training courses.
  • Previous SC-level security clearance.
