Cranleigh STEM is working with a global provider of PPE equipment, we are looking for an experienced polymer chemist to join its innovative team in Crawley on a permanent basis.

As a polymer chemist, you will assume responsibility and lead R&D projects, additionally, carry out various chemical and physical tests on new materials and applications to the customer's specifications.

To be considered you should hold a degree in a relevant discipline, ideally polymer or chemistry based, possess a strong background in polymer technology and proven experience in an industrial setting.

This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of product development projects and push the boundaries of polymer chemistry.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Handle material processing and injection moulding tasks.
  • Operate test equipment to assess product performance.
  • Adjust polymer formulations and troubleshoot adhesives and elastomer materials.
  • Repair and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Mix new materials using a two-roll mill or twin-screw compounding extruder.
  • Analyze data, process information, report findings, and draft technical manuals for customers and colleagues.
  • Plan and execute complex research projects, including the development of new footwear products and materials.
  • Improve existing products and processes.
  • Foster mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members.
  • Ensure products comply with current regulations and quality requirements by establishing control specifications and testing procedures in collaboration with the departmental manager.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Degree in Polymer Technology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in polymer technology and injection moulding.
  • Knowledge of footwear testing and manufacturing is beneficial but not essential.
  • Practical knowledge of rubber and plastic processing, including injection moulding, mixing, calendaring, compression moulding, and compounding.
  • Understanding of the laws of physics and their applications in mechanical and electrical contexts.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and adapt to various changing situations.
  • Excellent attention to detail and high accuracy.
  • Discretion in handling sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality.
  • Strong data analysis skills and decision-making abilities using various MS applications.
