S&D Trade Recruitment is supporting our client based in Croydon in their search for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer. This role offers the opportunity to lead design projects, oversee junior staff, and manage a variety of multi-disciplinary projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in both mechanical and public health design, project management, and team leadership within a consultancy environment. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality engineering solutions while maintaining budget and project timelines. The successful candidate will work on a variety of projects, including Education, Residential (New Build & Refurbishment), Commercial Buildings, Decarbonisation Initiatives, Condition & Acquisition Surveys, Contract Administration. Hours 37.5 per week Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 5.30 pm with an hour for lunch. Salary 55,000 - 65,000 dependant on experience.
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and mentor junior staff, ensuring adherence to company procedures and policies.
- Manage the design team and provide Mechanical Engineering support to all team members.
- Lead mechanical and public health design and project management across various project types.
- Develop specifications, drawings, schedules, and cost estimates.
- Ensure compliance with current Building Regulations, including Renewable Technologies, IES Thermal Modelling, SAPs, SBEM Calculations, EPCs, BREEAM, GLA London Plan, and Passivhaus Standards.
- Conduct site surveys, feasibility studies, and condition reports across multiple UK locations.
- Liaise directly with clients, attend meetings, and manage project expectations.
- Produce detailed specifications, design calculations, and tender documents.
- Monitor project financials and contribute to fee assessments and bid proposals.
- Carry out tender analysis and budget costing for mechanical services.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and standards, including CIBSE Guides, CDM Regulations, British Standards, and Energy & Sustainability Legislation.
- Implement and maintain company mechanical standards and best practices.
- Use AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Hevacomp, IES VE, and Microsoft Project to develop mechanical designs.
- Conduct quality inspections of projects and ensure high standards are maintained.
- Carry out on-site project management and condition/dilapidation assessments.
Required Experience & Skills:
- Required HNC, HND, or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- Proven experience in mechanical and public health design within a consultancy or contractor design capacity.
- Strong knowledge of Building Regulations and Energy and Sustainability Legislation.
- Experience in multi-disciplinary project management.
- Competence in producing detailed reports, specifications, and tender documentation.
- Experience in managing design teams and mentoring junior staff.
- Hands-on experience with AutoCAD, Revit MEP, Hevacomp, and IES VE.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Project).
- Membership with a relevant professional body (e.g., CIBSE or IMechE) is desirable.
- A full UK driving licence is required.
- Team player, strong communication skillset.
