Are you passionate about engineering and ready to lead a talented team to new heights? My client, a leading consultancy working in the HV Transmission Sector is looking for a proactive and experienced Principal Engineering CAD Technician to manage a small but skilled team of Engineering CAD Technicians. This role will be critical in delivering top-notch engineering drawings that meet both company and industry-specific standards.

This pivotal position could be based out of London, Derby, Hull or the York area.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead with Excellence: Oversee the production of high-quality engineering drawings, ensuring adherence to industry standards and company guidelines.
  • Team Deliverables: Manage your team's output, including wire clearance diagrams, RC detailing, steelwork detailing, feasibility drawings, POC layouts, construction site layouts, stage-by-stage diagrams, condition assessment diagrams, cable route layouts, and wood pole GA/EDs.
  • CAD Expertise: Provide your CAD knowledge and skills to new projects, tenders, and deliverables, and guide project managers on potential deliverables, timelines, and costs.
  • Collaborate and Resolve: Work closely with engineers to resolve design issues and ensure project feasibility and suitability.
  • Workflow Management: Coordinate your team's workflow to meet deadlines and produce a wide range of CAD drawings using various software, including Microstation 2D/3D CAD and Solid Edge 3D CAD.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensure the highest quality in all drawings by conducting thorough QA/QC checks and adhering to client needs and quality procedures.
  • Develop and Innovate: Contribute to the development of CAD systems and best practice documents, and continually improve existing systems while exploring new revenue streams.
  • Mentor and Grow: Lead by example by mentoring and training your team, conducting annual appraisals, monthly one-on-ones, and fostering a high-performing, collaborative environment.

Who You Are:

  • Qualifications: Ideally, you have an HND/HNC in Engineering (or equivalent) and hold at least 5 GCSEs (Grades A-C or equivalent), including English and Maths. A UK driving licence (or equivalent) is essential.
  • Experience: With a minimum of 10 years in an Engineering/Civils environment, you bring strong working knowledge of relevant software (Microstation Connect, SolidEdge, NX, or Open Utilities Substation) and up-to-date industry standards and practices.
  • Ideally you will have worked within the HV Power Transmission Sector draughting for Overhead Lines and Substation projects.
  • Attributes: You are a flexible team player with excellent leadership skills, including communication, motivation, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously. You're committed to supporting and mentoring junior team members.
