About the RoleHays recruitment are working alongside a College to help them recruit a Curriculum Leader for English. This role involves acting as the second in the department and supporting the Director of Learning for English. We are looking for someone with outstanding subject knowledge and a genuine passion for English, who can inspire students to love the subject. Key Information

Qualifications and Experience

  • A graduate with qualified teacher status
  • An outstanding teacher in English with a strong teaching record
  • Relevant qualifications (both formal and through appropriate experience) to meet the challenge of the appointment
  • Excellent in-depth knowledge of the English curriculum and its role in the development of young people
  • An understanding of the importance of a rigorous reading strategy to ensure students' confidence and reading fluency

Job DescriptionIntroduction to the Department:

The English team consists of 10 teachers, 5 of whom hold positions of responsibility across the key stages in English, including a Director of English. English is extremely well taught across all key stages, including Sixth Form education, with students reaching high levels of attainment and achievement. You will be joining a high-performing team with a proven track record of delivering excellent GCSE and A-level results.

Duties of the Role:

  • Provide impactful leadership to the team, working closely with the Director of Learning for English
  • Secure high standards of learning and achievement in English across Key Stages 4 and 5
  • Demonstrate excellent subject knowledge and good working knowledge of the curriculum
  • Use a range of teaching, learning, and assessment strategies to provide opportunities for all learners to achieve their potential
  • Have high expectations of our young people
  • Contribute to broad aspects of English
  • Work effectively as part of a team, sharing good practice

Teaching and Learning:

  • Ensure the curriculum has appropriate depth and breadth, is sequenced effectively, and fulfils the national curriculum
  • Support the Director of Learning with quality assurance
  • Meet the needs of all students, considering individual requirements
  • Fulfill the demands of relevant specifications, tutor guides, and ethos
  • Make a positive impact on student attainment and achievement

Student Support:

  • Support students outside their timetabled learning sessions through clinics and tutorials
  • Enhance students' experience of English through enrichment and extension activities
  • Participate in and contribute to English team meetings and professional development sessions
  • Work with other staff to enhance the English curriculum and innovate new ideas to improve student outcomes
  • Support reading across the College, including students in the early stages of reading

Assessment and Reporting:

  • Ensure regular formative assessment to address knowledge gaps and inform teaching
  • Provide students with regular, incisive feedback in line with policies
  • Ensure recording and reporting are in line with policies
  • Accurately assess each learning group's levels of attainment against student targets and national benchmarks

Professional Responsibilities:

  • Set and maintain high standards, expectations, and aspirations for both staff and students
  • Maintain a safe and well-ordered learning environment
  • Actively seek opportunities for professional development
  • Ensure the curriculum is highly effective in its planning and delivery
  • Collaborate with the Director of Learning to move the team forward and constantly improve the offer available for our students
  • Ensure clear communication pathways and structures within the English team
