Astute's Power Team is exclusively partnered with a market-leading Energy company, to recruit for a Control Systems Engineer to work across their fleet of gas-fired power stations. Being based in the Midlands will be advantageous but if you are happy to travel across England, this will be fine.

The vital Control Systems Engineer role comes with a basic salary of 52,000 - 58,000 + bonus + mileage expenses when travelling to the other sites + benefits.

Responsibilities and duties

Reporting to the EC&I Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • Establish yourself as the primary expert on control systems within the company, gaining knowledge of various systems.
  • Identify and resolve the root causes of equipment failures to prevent recurring issues.
  • Create and maintain records, documentation, and logs detailing system performance, faults, repairs, and tests.
  • Analyse log file data to enhance equipment reliability and efficiency.
  • Support EC&I Technicians and Engineers in diagnosing and troubleshooting control system-related issues.
  • Report any observed issues or concerns at the plant while on-site.
  • Be open to frequent travel across the UK and occasional international trips when required.
  • Foster strong working relationships with external control system engineering partners.
  • Carry out additional duties as assigned by the EC&I Manager or other senior management



Professional qualifications

We are looking for someone with the following:

  • Ideally a formal engineering qualification in a relevant discipline such as electrical, controls and instrumentation, etc
  • A full UK driving licence is a necessity given the nature of the role




Personal skills, prior experience and knowledge

The Control Systems Engineer role would suit someone who has:

  • A strong and comprehensive understanding of control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA/DCS, networks, servers, drives, and data management.
  • Experience in design and develop detailed layouts, control panel configurations, and wiring schematics for control system upgrades and modifications.
  • Experience with programming and modifying PLC codes, with required expertise in GE Fanuc Machine Edition and Siemens SIMATIC S7/WinCC, while experience with Allen Bradley Studio 5000 and Woodward GAP is desirable.
  • Implement graphical modifications to HMI applications.
  • Worked with industrial communication protocols such as Serial interfaces, Profibus, Ethernet, and Modbus.
  • Effectively diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Possess a basic understanding of compressible flow dynamics (e.g., natural gas, air) and experience diagnosing faults in field equipment, including instrumentation, actuators, and motors.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), particularly in managing work orders, job planning, and purchasing.
