Residential Support Worker
Location: Mackworth, Derby DE22 4LL
Salary: Starting at £31,140.20 per annum
Hours: 3 on 3 off condensed hours rota, 50 .75 hours per week, 52 weeks
Our client is a small school, with capacity for 18 children, including 7 residential placements, for children aged 6-16 with a range and complexity of needs including: Autistic Spectrum Conditions, Moderate to Severe Learning Difficulties and Disabilities, Speech, Language and Communication Difficulties, associated behavioural difficulties and Prader Willi Syndrome. They are now looking to add to their care team.
The Role
This role offers a fantastic opportunity to be part of a welcoming and supportive team and to help develop a vibrant and modern residential provision. Their Residential Support Workers support the children to find a way of life that suits them and to help them achieve their maximum potential level of independence. You will play a key role in the delivery of a sound, consistent care provision.
Your Duties and Responsibilities will be to work at a professional level with;
- The Care Management Team for all working arrangements in the residential setting
- The class teacher during education time
- The inter-disciplinary team working with and around individual children
- All aspects of safeguarding which may impact directly or indirectly on the children
Particular Responsibilities
- To ensure that a childs entitlement to a high standard of welfare and safety is met by meeting the requirements of the Children Act 1989, Regulations 2015, Quality Standards and any further/ up-dated legislation deemed appropriate by SENAD.
- To ensure that a childs entitlement to a high standard of teaching and learning and communication is achieved in association with teachers and therapists.
- To ensure a childs entitlement to a high standard of care
- Learning independence and communication is achieved in association with the individuals Interdisciplinary team.
- To ensure that childrens entitlement to self-advocacy and safety are met through adopting their preferred communication styles and using proactive approaches to their communication needs e.g. NAPPI and Child protection policy.
Key Tasks
- To contribute towards 1:1 Supervision and Performance Management Meetings in order to promote good practice and personal and professional development.
- To play an active part of the key worker team in line with the Maple View School key working policy.
- To support the children in areas of personal hygiene and intimate care procedures.
- To be aware of Maple View Schools NAPPI policies in dealing with all areas of a childs welfare e.g. putting appropriate augmentative communication systems in place; making judgements about what kind of interventions are appropriate; following approaches by NAPPI trainers and the Team around the child (TAC).
- To implement care procedures as presented in the school handbook and accordance with Quality Standards.
- To promote independence and choice to individuals and advocate on behalf of the children.
You as an employee are required by The Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 to;

- Ensure you do not misuse or interfere with equipment provided for your safety or the safety of others.
Skills and Qualifications
- English and Maths BTEC Level 2/GCSE/equivalent
- Willingness to undertake accredited courses and mandatory training within the time set
- Right to work in UK
- Experience of working in a residential school / care setting and with children and young people
- Hold a relevant L3 Diploma (or be willing to work towards achieving this)
- Be resilient and able to work with, and support others to work with, challenging behaviour
- How to care for and support others
- Knowledge of the role and an understanding of its rewards and challenges
- Able to work under guidance of a Team Leader
- Good verbal and listening skills
- Ability to work as a team member
- Able to use own initiative
- Able to work in challenging circumstances
- No history of misconduct associated with working with children, young adults or other vulnerable groups
