This is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing development management, planning applications, and ensuring compliance with national and local planning policies. The role requires strong strategic leadership, stakeholder engagement, and performance management to drive high-quality development and place-shaping initiatives.Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Development Management service.
  • Ensure effective determination of planning applications and enforcement matters.
  • Manage stakeholder relationships, including elected members, local communities, and statutory bodies.
  • Lead the cultural and organisational change within the service, embedding a customer-focused approach.
  • Develop a robust performance framework to track and enhance service delivery.
  • Oversee the service’s budget, income projections, and financial sustainability.
  • Represent the council at regional and national planning events.
  • Ensure the team is up to date with planning legislation and policy changes.
Essential Skills & Experience:
  • Degree in Town Planning or a related field (or equivalent knowledge and experience).
  • Postgraduate qualification and membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., RTPI).
  • Proven experience in a senior planning role within local government.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with experience leading large teams.
  • Expertise in managing major planning applications, appeals, and enforcement.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and negotiation skills.
  • Experience in budget management and service improvement.
