Senior Legal Officer / Lawyer – Contracts, Commercial and Projects
  • Hourly Rate: £47 to £50 per hour (via umbrella)
  • Location: Mostly home working with occasional presence required in Doncaster

We are seeking a Senior Legal Officer to provide expert legal support and advice, ensuring the successful delivery of key commercial projects for the Council. This role is crucial in supporting the Head of Service and other Senior Legal Officers on complex legal matters.

Day-to-day of the role:
  • Provide high-quality, timely legal and commercial advice to the Council, its officers, and elected members to ensure lawful decisions are taken in the best interests of the Council.
  • Draft and advise on contracts, construction contracts, grants, and other commercial documents to ensure the Council meets its legal obligations within project timelines.
  • Represent the Council and deputise for other Council Officers to ensure continuous access to commercial advice and assistance.
  • Ensure work is undertaken in accordance with relevant professional standards and contributes to the development and delivery of a modern legal service.
  • Prepare and present training programmes to team members and other Council officers, partners, and elected members to keep them updated with relevant legal knowledge.
  • Conduct all work in accordance with internal policies and procedures, including the effective use of a case management and time recording system.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Qualified and admitted as a Solicitor, or called as a Barrister or CILEx Lawyer.
  • Substantial post-qualification experience.
  • Significant knowledge and experience in Contract and Commercial matters, with a good understanding of complementary law.
  • Considerable experience advising on significant commercial projects.
  • High standard of drafting, negotiating, presentation, communication, and personal organisation skills.
  • Clear understanding of the impact of Value for Money in the delivery of services.
  • Knowledge of Local Government Law, the legislative framework within Local Government, and issues relevant to the service responsibilities.
  • Thorough understanding of current Procurement legislation and subsidy legislation.
  • Demonstrated success in working with partners, both external and internal, to achieve common goals.
  • Good understanding of construction contracts (NEC/JCT).
