A Day in the Life in HMP Mental Health Care:

As a Band 6 Mental Health Practitioner working within an HMP setting, your day will be both challenging and rewarding. You’ll begin by reviewing your caseload and attending a morning briefing to discuss urgent referrals and assess risks. You’ll provide comprehensive mental health assessments to individuals in custody, managing a range of complex mental health needs. From facilitating one-to-one interventions and psychoeducational sessions to supporting crisis management, you’ll ensure that each person receives tailored care.

Collaboration is key—you’ll work alongside prison healthcare staff, psychologists, psychiatrists, and other agencies to deliver integrated mental health support. In the afternoon, you may conduct risk assessments, respond to crisis situations, or liaise with multidisciplinary teams and external organizations to coordinate care. Throughout the day, you’ll maintain accurate documentation, ensuring all clinical records are up-to-date and compliant. This is a role where your skills and dedication can have a profound impact on some of the most vulnerable individuals in the prison system.

Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Registration: Current and valid registration with the NMC.
  • Experience: Proven mental health experience, ideally in a secure or prison environment.
