In this role, The Mechanical Project Engineer plans and delivers the structural enclosure, mechanical building services and external building envelope for individual projects within a programme, ensuring timely delivery, cost-effectiveness, and customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate will work closely with clients, contractors, and cross-functional teams to deliver successful projects that meet technical specifications and client expectations.

They apply proven abilities to the design of mechanical elements to multiple projects, alone or as part of a multi-disciplined project team. A project could consist of: Data Centre Cooling packages, Heat Transfer packages, Pump packages, Boiler plant packages, Chiller / Cooling Tower plant packages, standalone Control Systems or similar. They possess Project Management skills and have a strong focus on providing excellent Customer Care.

Key Accountabilities

Mechanical System Design and Development:

  • Design, model, and analyse mechanical systems and components (e.g., HVAC, piping, structural supports, and machinery) using software like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or ANSYS.
  • Perform calculations and simulations to assess performance factors, including load, stress, and thermodynamics, ensuring systems are efficient, robust, and within specification.
  • Develop and review technical specifications, schematics, and layout drawings to guide installation and integration within the projects scope.

Project Planning and Coordination:

    • Define project requirements and objectives with stakeholders to establish clear project goals and deliverables.
    • Clear communication of mechanical layout requirements and hours, free of defects and compliant to customer specification / Armstrong standards.
    • Liaison with professional bodies
    • Develop and maintain project schedules for mechanical tasks, setting milestones and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure timely completion.
    • Interface with other departments (electrical, civil, structural) to align mechanical aspects with broader project requirements and resolve any design or scheduling conflicts.

Compliance and Safety:

    • Ensure that all mechanical designs adhere to relevant industry codes, safety standards, and regulatory requirements, such as ASME, OSHA, and ISO.
    • Conduct safety reviews and hazard analyses to identify risks in mechanical design and installation, implementing measures to mitigate hazards.
    • Participate in site inspections and audits to verify compliance and provide guidance on corrective actions as needed.
    • Maintenance of relevant regulatory /legislative compliance

Technical Support and Problem Solving:

    • Provide on-site technical support during installation, testing, and commissioning phases, addressing any issues or modifications required.
    • Troubleshoot mechanical issues during project execution, identifying root causes and developing solutions to maintain project timelines.
    • Coordinate with vendors and contractors to ensure that installed components and systems meet project specifications and quality standards.

Cost Management and Budget Control:

    • Prepare cost estimates and budgets for mechanical components, labour, and materials; monitor actual expenses to ensure alignment with the budget.
    • Identify and implement cost-saving measures without compromising project quality or safety standards.
    • Assist procurement by selecting vendors, verifying equipment and material specifications, and negotiating competitive pricing.

Documentation and Reporting:

    • Maintain comprehensive project documentation, including design calculations, test results, and technical drawings.
    • Adherence to project milestone review and approval process. Linking with customers.
    • Generate progress reports, technical reports, and final project summaries to communicate project status to stakeholders.
    • Compile and organize all as-built documentation and operation manuals for project closeout and future reference.
    • Oversee the documentation of project activities, including progress reports, test results, and final project handover documents.

What Were Looking For

To thrive in this role, you should bring:

  • Education: Degree in Mechanical Engineering. HNC Level minimum requirement.
  • Experience: Substantial work experience in mechanical project engineering, particularly within project-focused environments such as construction, manufacturing, or energy.
  • Certifications: PMP, AGPM or Prince 2.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficiency in mechanical design and analysis software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, ANSYS, or similar) and strong understanding of mechanical principles.
  • Analytical Abilities: Ability to conduct detailed mechanical analyses and interpret results to ensure designs meet specifications and safety requirements.
  • Project Management: Solid grasp of project management principles, including scheduling, resource allocation, and risk assessment.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present technical information to diverse stakeholders.
  • Attention to Detail: High attention to detail, especially regarding safety and quality standards in design and implementation.
  • Time Management: Ability to work on own initiative but also be a key member of a team. Ability to management multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines.
  • Other:Located in Droitwich Spa with travel to customer sites within the EMEA region. When not traveling to customers site, role require Droitwich Spa site attendance Monday-Friday. Full driving licence required.
