Robert Half are pleased to be working in partnership with a well-known public-sector organisation based in Swindon to recruit a Financial Controller on a permanent basis. This role will play a key role in managing and overseeing the financial operations of the organisation including the transactional, financial reporting, treasury and tax teams. This is a technically focused role that would suit an ACA/ACCA qualified Accountant with 5+ years PQE.

The role

The Financial Controller will be responsible for leading the financial accounting activities of the organisation including managing and maintaining accounting regulations and all financial reporting, leading the audit process, managing treasury and managing the shared service centre. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Being the lead contact for the audit, managing all statutory reporting deadlines and ensuring accounting controls are maintained.
  • Ensure the timely production of tax returns, e.g. VAT as well as PAYE and other payroll deductions, acting as the lead contact for HMRC, particularly in regard to the management of complex negotiations (e.g. partial exemption).
  • Oversee the management of the shared service centre.
  • Line management of 4 team members.
  • Budgeting.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and reporting standards.
  • Prepare accurate and timely management accounts and statutory financial statements.
  • Monitor and manage cash flow, funding, and financial sustainability.

Profile

This role would suit an ACA/ACCA qualified accountant with 5+ years PQE. Key skills/attributes will include:

  • Proven experience in a Financial Controller or senior finance role, ideally within the not-for-profit or charity sector.
  • Qualified accountant ACA, ACCA preferably with an audit/financial reporting background.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience leading a small finance team.
  • Excellent knowledge of financial reporting, compliance, and audit processes.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and able to communicate complex financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Passionate about making a difference and supporting the goals of a not-for-profit organisation.
