Positive Behaviour Mentor Required for School in East Grinstead

This school is set in East Grinstead and is an all through school for vulnerable students who have Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This school is an independent special day school for pupils with identified social, emotional, behavioural and mental health needs and social communication difficulties. Some children have been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, and all pupils have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Being in a more rural location, they place a strong emphasis on outdoor learning, through subjects including: Horticulture, Forest School, Horse Riding and Equine Studies. They also deliver multiple creative subjects, such as, Ceramics, Food Technology and Art & Textiles. Therefore, they are looking for someone who is happy and keen to participate in all subjects across the school.

Due to the location of the school, the ideal candidate will need to be a driver!

Applications for the position are welcome from candidates of ranging experience, and training will be provided, although previous experience working with students with SEMH, particularly attachment and trauma is preferable. Experience working with children with challenging behaviour is important and a strong sense of behaviour management is key.

This is also a fantastic opportunity for graduates who want to move into a career in teaching. You will benefit from in-depth support and training from the school, and develop your knowledge of the national curriculum.

We welcome graduates from all subjects to apply, however, Psychology graduates in particular are strongly encouraged to apply! Your Role

  • Supporting a range of vulnerable children ranging from Reception to KS4

  • Be able to appropriately calm children down and de-escalate

  • Be able to effectively behaviour manage

  • Working with other support staff to engage pupils in class and minimise disruption

  • Providing feedback to teachers and parents

  • Be available - Full or Part time - 8.30am - 4.30pm

  • You will be expected to think on your feet and be proactive, no day is the same in a Special School, so being prepared is vital.

  • Ability to form excellent relationships and rapport with pupils
