Principal Test and Evaluation Engineer

This is a client I know very well and have worked with several times before, and they have a very exciting brand new opportunity available for a Principal Test and Evaluation Engineer to join their small, but highly experienced and knowledgeable team.

You will be working on a portfolio of projects that span activities across the full engineering product life cycle. The primary objective of the Principal Test and Evaluation Engineer is to provide a dedicated in-house Test and Evaluation capability, and to lead and manage the UK based trial and testing projects and activities for systems and products that have been designed and built by the New Technologies business unit.

Summary

The Principal T&E Engineer plays a pivotal role in leading, defining, and implementing engineering solutions. The Principal T&E Engineer is responsible for identifying and addressing complex issues, leading project execution, and providing specialist advice to various stakeholders. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities from project and technical leadership to technical support, ensuring the delivery of high-quality engineering solutions within set constraints.

Engineering expertise and issue resolution:

  • Work within Engineering Authorisation Process (EAP) within designated areas of expertise and competence, contingent upon competency assessments.
  • Identify complex issues, and product and process improvements, and develop business cases for internal and external stakeholders, complete with associated budgets and schedules.
  • Lead and deliver the resolution of complex issues, adhering to quality, budget, and time constraints.

Project leadership and execution:

  • Direct and contribute to the execution of projects and company initiatives, ensuring alignment with organisational goals.
  • Provide expert consultation services to management, fellow engineers, and external customers as necessary.

Project engineering:

  • Spearhead projects, collaborating with customers, partners, and suppliers to establish requirements and define work scopes.
  • Lead the successful delivery of T&E or tasks in the relevant domain to the satisfaction of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the technical development of T&E components to Requests for Quotations (RFQs).
  • Oversee T&E planning, costing, scheduling, and monitoring, while ensuring adherence to engineering policies, plans, processes, and procedures.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to the development of engineering policies and initiatives relating to T&E.
  • Work in accordance with approved processes, including the Engineering Management System (EMS) and Project Management framework.

System and product trial, test, and evaluation:

  • Independently lead and manage UK based Acceptance and Operational test and evaluation of battery systems and products designed and built by the New Technologies business unit to achieve successful trial and test outcomes with limited guidance and supervision.
  • Suitably tailor the application of processes to the scope and complexity of the trial and testing activities to be conducted.
  • Develop and maintain trial and test plans, processes, and procedures to ensure a consistent approach to trial and testing activities, and to streamline checking and approval activities.
  • Originate, check, and approve fit-for-purpose trial and test artefacts such as Test Plans, Test Procedures, and Test Reports to a high-quality standard.
  • Chair Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs) and Test Debriefs, including Lessons Learnt Meetings.
  • Conduct and lead, where appropriate, technical reviews, ensuring systems, products and services meet required standards.
  • Oversee and conduct preparation activities, planning activities, and execution activities for trial and testing activities.
  • Analyse, interpret, evaluate, and communicate trial and test results, and recommend subsequent actions based on data driven results.

Must have skills and experience

  • Specialist and authoritative knowledge of, and experience in, complex testing and evaluation activities for systems and products
  • Proven ability in the development, implementation, and finalisation of complex technical projects
  • Experience working with databases, and the management and analysis of test result data
  • Good knowledge of Systems Engineering and Verification & Validation methodologies and processes.
  • Highly developed written communication skills for the development and review of specifications, plan, processes, and reports.
  • Outstanding ability to write and review complex reports, briefing notes, submissions, and presentations.
  • Build collaborative partnerships across both internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong influencing, analytical, and problem solving skills
