Coastal Engineering Specialist

Our client is happy to consider early careers candidates who have completed a graduate programme within a consultancy environment or candidates at a more senior level of experience.

About the Role

We are looking for a motivated individual to lead and deliver a variety of coastal engineering and adaptation projects. The role involves processing and analyzing hydrodynamic and beach morphodynamic data, understanding nearshore coastal processes, and predicting future coastal changes through the use of numerical models such as XBeach, UNIBEST, ShorelineS, and SWAN.

The ideal candidate will also have an interest in expanding our service offerings, developing innovative methodologies to improve predictions of coastal change, and supporting our growing portfolio of projects. You should bring enthusiasm and initiative, contributing to the broader goals of our team. Our work includes internal research and development as well as collaboration with academic institutions to deliver science-based solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analyse data related to coastal processes.
  • Apply numerical models to support consultancy and research projects.
  • Analyse and interpret model outputs.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations.
  • Occasionally conduct site visits or surveys, including coastal WFD and erosion assessments.

Candidate Profile

We seek a professional who can independently develop technical solutions for a range of coastal engineering and geomorphology challenges, including coastal flooding and erosion. The candidate will also support team members by developing and applying technical methodologies to meet project goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's and Master's degrees in a relevant field (e.g., Coastal Engineering, Coastal Geomorphology, Oceanography, Physical Sciences).
  • A PhD in a relevant field (e.g., Coastal Engineering, Oceanography, Physical Sciences) is desirable.
  • Chartered status (e.g., with ICE or CIWEM) is advantageous. Applicants should either be Chartered or committed to achieving Chartered status with an appropriate professional body.

Essential Skills

  • Strong analytical and programming skills for data processing (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
  • Experience in data processing and analysis.
  • Proficiency in using GIS software.
  • Knowledge of nearshore hydrodynamic and beach morphodynamic processes related to coastal flood risk and erosion.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A collaborative and team-oriented approach.

Desirable Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in programming for data processing (e.g., MATLAB, Python).
  • Experience applying numerical models such as XBeach, SWAN, Delft3D, or TELEMAC.
  • Skills in image processing for coastal purposes and remote sensing.
  • Experience with the collection and management of hydrodynamic and beach morphodynamic data.

This role is a fantastic opportunity for a dynamic individual who is passionate about coastal engineering and eager to make an impact in a collaborative environment.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
