Heat Pump Engineer (North London / South East)

*Note it is important in this role to be able to fit/install and diagnose issues with heat pumps.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled Heat Pump Engineer to join a client in the North of London covering . In this role, you will focus on the installation of heat pump systems (air source, ground source, etc.) and the diagnosis of faults in existing installations. You will conduct site surveys, install and commission heat pump units, and troubleshoot any issues to ensure systems operate at peak efficiency. The Heat Pump Engineer will also perform routine maintenance, uphold industry compliance standards, and provide excellent customer service by advising clients on energy-efficient practices. This is a field-based position, offering an exciting opportunity to work on renewable energy solutions while maintaining high quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Heat Pump Installation: Install various types of heat pumps (air source, ground source, and hybrid systems) in residential and/or commercial properties, including all related pipework, controls, and electrical connections.
  • Site Surveys & Assessment: Conduct thorough site surveys and heat loss assessments prior to installation to determine optimal system design, sizing, and placement.
  • Fault Diagnosis & Repair: Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with existing heat pump systems. Carry out effective repairs or part replacements to resolve issues and restore efficient operation.
  • Maintenance & Servicing: Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and servicing of heat pump systems to ensure reliability and longevity. This includes checking refrigerant levels, cleaning filters, and testing system performance.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all installation and service work complies with current industry regulations, standards, and best practices (including MCS guidelines, F-Gas regulations, and building codes). Maintain a strong focus on health and safety procedures at all times.
  • Customer Advisement: Educate and advise customers on their heat pump systems, explaining proper operation and control settings. Provide guidance on energy efficiency improvements and answer any questions to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Documentation: Complete all necessary documentation and reports. This includes preparing installation records, commissioning certificates, maintenance checklists, fault reports, and any required compliance paperwork in a timely manner.

Requirements:

  • Qualifications: NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plumbing and Heating (or equivalent HVAC qualification).
  • Experience: Proven experience in heat pump installation, maintenance, and fault-finding. A solid track record of working with air source and/or ground source heat pump systems is essential.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong knowledge of heat pump technology and HVAC systems, including understanding of refrigerant circuits, electrical controls, and plumbing systems. Familiarity with industry regulations and compliance requirements (e.g., MCS standards, building regulations, and safety codes).
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Excellent diagnostic and troubleshooting skills with the ability to systematically identify and fix issues. Attention to detail when inspecting systems and completing work.
  • Driving License: Full UK driving license is required (this role involves traveling to various sites across the South East).

Desirable Skills:

  • Electrical Qualifications: Additional electrical certifications such as 18th Edition Wiring Regulations or Part P qualification, which are beneficial for integrating and wiring heat pump systems.
  • Diverse Experience: Experience working on both residential and commercial heat pump projects, including knowledge of larger scale systems or cascaded units.
  • Product Knowledge: Familiarity with a range of heat pump brands and models, as well as their control interfaces and software. Any manufacturer-specific training or certifications would be an advantage.
  • Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to clearly explain technical information to customers and provide top-notch customer service.
  • Teamwork: Able to collaborate with other engineers, electricians, and project managers when required. A professional and courteous approach when working on client premises.
