As a Principal Technologist, you will lead technology strategy and implementation for AI and related fields within the UK Public Sector, shaping a 10-year vision and driving transformational change. You will manage and mentor a team, set technology standards, and engage with vendors and stakeholders at all levels. The role requires your deep expertise in AI/ML, strong leadership skills, and experience in cross-functional collaboration. Effective communication, documentation, and a commitment to continuous learning and upskilling will be crucial. Government experience and familiarity with industry standards will be highly beneficial.
1. Technical Expertise and Industry Standards
* Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning: In-depth knowledge of AI and ML technologies, including experience in designing and implementing AI/ML systems.
* Agile Methodologies: Familiarity with Agile practices and how they apply to technology development and project management.
* Service and Industry Standards: Knowledge of relevant industry standards related to AI/ML and Agile practices. This may include standards such as ISO/IEC 27001 (Information Security), ISO/IEC 29100 (Privacy), and Agile frameworks like Scrum and Kanban.
2. Leadership and Strategic Vision
* Setting Vision and Leading Change: Proven experience in setting a strategic vision for digital and data initiatives and leading transformational change.
* Technology Design and Execution: Experience in designing and building technology, with the ability to evaluate proposals, make execution decisions, and build credibility with stakeholders.
3. Stakeholder Engagement
* Vendor and Supplier Engagement: Experience in engaging with suppliers and vendors, both formally and informally, to maximise technology solutions and manage commercial engagements.
* Senior Stakeholder Presentation: Comfort and proficiency in presenting complex technical concepts to senior stakeholders, including CTOs, CDOs, ministers, and permanent secretaries.
4. Communication and Learning
* Documentation and Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written skills for documenting frameworks, creating content, and communicating with diverse audiences.
* Continuous Learning and Mentoring: A commitment to continuous learning and a proactive approach to sharing knowledge through coaching and mentoring.
5. Technical Specialism and Certifications
* Top Skill Levels in DDaT: High proficiency in a DDaT specialism, likely from Architecture, Data, IT Operations, or Software Development groups.
* Relevant Certifications: Possession of industry certifications relevant to the technical specialism.
6. Experience and Impact
* AI/ML Experience: At least 2 years of direct experience working with AI/ML technologies as the primary role.
* Delivering Outcomes with Impact: Proven track record of building and applying models that deliver meaningful outcomes and drive organisational impact.
7. Collaboration and Government Experience
* Collaborative Work: Ability to work effectively across multi-disciplinary teams and leverage subject matter experts.
* Government Experience: Experience within national or local government settings is highly beneficial, understanding public sector dynamics and requirements.
