Our client is looking for a talented and dedicated Engineering Design Specialist to join our team. Reporting to the Principal Engineer or Regional Discipline Lead, you will be responsible for providing high-quality engineering design services that minimize risks and maximize profits on turnkey and engineering services contracts. You will coordinate the design process, produce design documents and drawings, and ensure all health and safety requirements, specifications, and standards are adhered to.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop cost-effective design layouts that meet specification requirements and can be effectively constructed and commissioned.
  • Take a holistic approach to cost management by considering design time, material costs, erection costs, and the impact of design solutions on other disciplines.
  • Utilize standard practices to maintain competitiveness and ensure the quality of design work.
  • Provide estimates and feedback to the Proposals Department.
  • Follow procedures and processes that support the ongoing development of the department.
  • Assist in developing, monitoring, and reviewing procedures to ensure efficient department operations.
  • Write, update, and monitor procedures to improve department workflows.
  • Coordinate designs with internal and external disciplines to ensure alignment and the smooth running of contracts.
  • Maintain accurate files and records throughout the duration of contracts.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by contributing to a culture where meeting customer needs is a primary objective.
  • Maintain a personal development plan to support ongoing professional growth.
  • Assist in supervising and developing staff within the department.
  • Help ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
  • Minimize waste in all departmental activities.
  • Incorporate environmental considerations into the design process.
  • Ensure that all designs fully comply with health and safety requirements.

Essential:

  • Proven experience in delivering process plant systems on complex water industry engineering projects.
  • Strong knowledge of motor control centers, protection systems, motor starters (including VSDs), and harmonic mitigation methods.
  • Expertise in selecting and specifying instrumentation, industrial communications, PLCs, and SCADA systems.
  • A solid understanding of water and sewage treatment principles.
  • Experience in managing and mentoring staff in the design aspects of water and sewage treatment plants.
  • Membership of a professional institution (chartered or nearing chartership status).

Desirable:

  • Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (minimum HND in relevant discipline; degree preferred).
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant engineering field.
  • Experience working on design and construct projects using digital design methods.
  • Ability to rationalize designs and produce cost-effective plant layouts.
  • Strong general knowledge of mechanical, process, electrical engineering, and project management within water treatment.
  • Flexibility and ability to process and analyze large amounts of data efficiently.
  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to convey technical proposals confidently and clearly.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and design software.
  • Full driving license.
