Position Details:

Employer: Brookstreet

Role: Court Usher

Hours: 37 hours per week Monday to Friday, there is a possibility for flexi-time but you must to be on site during core hrs - 9.30-3.30

Duration: Temporary assignment until 30/06/25, with potential for extension based on performance

Pay Rate: 11.44/hr for the first 12 working weeks, after that its going up to 12.07/hr

Location: Exeter Law Courts, Southernhay Gardens, Exeter, EX1 1JL

Start Date: ASAP, vetting pending

Key Responsibilities:

Work environment in a multi-jurisdictional court

  • Ensuring parties are ready for court hearings, calling on cases in the court room, ensuring customers make contact with solicitors
  • Swear in Juries, make sure Jurors enter court room.
  • Liaise with Barristers and Judiciary to ensure cases are ready to be heard.
  • Basic admin duties, answering calls and post duties.
  • Multi-jurisdictional court Usher - acting as first point of contact for all court users involved in hearings which involves:
  • Regular contact with judiciary
  • Meet members of public and legal representatives
  • Prepare courts/hearing rooms
  • Ensuring court runs smoothly/efficiently
  • Assisting Admin staff with smooth flow of work
  • Ability to react quickly and professionally to situations, some of which may be unexpected, whilst working within regulated guidelines.
  • Deal sensitively and professionally with people from all walks of life; many of whom may be vulnerable and under stress.
  • Ability to take a firm stance with those who may not understand or welcome procedures that need to be followed.
  • Team working but, with management support, be responsible for own time.
  • IT literacy with ability to use Microsoft Office applications (Outlook/Word/Excel) is essential. Court ushers are also required to use a variety of 'in-house' IT application and assist with operating other equipment, e.g. Video Links etc.

Skills and Qualifications:

Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Tech Savvy: Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook. You will be using the Cloud Video Platform (CVP), CVP is an internet-based video meeting service for setting up remote hearings

Attention to Detail: Strong organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail.

Note: The offered candidate is subject to vetting - enhanced DBS clearance and an activity check for the last 3 years.
