Role Overview:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mechanical Project Engineer to join a dynamic team delivering critical mechanical engineering solutions for a Ministry of Defence (MOD) facility in Gloucestershire. This is a high-security project, and successful candidates will be required to obtain security clearance for the duration of the project. As the Mechanical Project Engineer, you will take ownership of the technical aspects of mechanical engineering on the project, from design and installation through to commissioning and handover. You will work closely with the project management team, subcontractors, and other engineers to ensure the mechanical systems are delivered on time, within budget, and in full compliance with all relevant standards, safety regulations, and client specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Project Engineering & Design:
Provide mechanical engineering expertise throughout the project lifecycle, from initial design and development to installation, commissioning, and handover.
Review and assess project specifications, drawings, and design documents, ensuring that mechanical systems (HVAC, heating, ventilation, plumbing, and mechanical services) meet both client requirements and regulatory standards.
Liaise with the design team to ensure that mechanical designs are fully integrated with other building systems (e.g., electrical and fire systems) and are delivered in line with the project schedule.
Assist in preparing detailed engineering calculations, risk assessments, and method statements for the mechanical elements of the project.
2. Project Delivery & Management:
Manage the day-to-day technical delivery of mechanical systems, ensuring that they are installed and commissioned to the highest standards.
Work closely with project managers and site managers to ensure the mechanical systems are being installed on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards.
Support the procurement process for mechanical systems and materials, liaising with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure timely delivery of equipment and materials to site.
Conduct regular site visits to monitor progress, inspect works, and resolve any technical issues or discrepancies.
Oversee the installation of mechanical systems by subcontractors, ensuring they adhere to design specifications and best practices.
Ensure that the mechanical services are fully integrated with the overall building system and client requirements.
3. Health, Safety & Compliance:
Ensure that all mechanical works are carried out in accordance with health and safety regulations, ensuring that safe systems of work are in place and that risks are mitigated.
Carry out regular site inspections and audits of mechanical works to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
Manage the quality control process, ensuring that all installations meet the required technical and regulatory standards.
Ensure the project complies with all relevant MOD, health and safety, and industry standards, including quality assurance and environmental regulations.
4. Commissioning & Handover:
Lead the commissioning of mechanical systems, ensuring all installations are tested and fully operational before handover to the client.
Work closely with the project team to ensure the smooth handover of completed mechanical systems, ensuring that all documentation (e.g., O&M manuals, as-built drawings, testing certificates) is prepared and provided to the client.
Support the training of client personnel, ensuring they are familiar with the operation and maintenance of the installed systems.
5. Stakeholder & Client Liaison:
Act as a main technical point of contact for the client, MOD representatives, and other key stakeholders throughout the project.
Provide regular technical updates and progress reports to the project manager and client, addressing any issues or concerns in a timely manner.
Build and maintain strong professional relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including clients, suppliers, and subcontractors.
6. Cost Control & Reporting:
Assist with budget management for mechanical works, ensuring the project remains within financial parameters.
Track costs and variations related to the mechanical scope of work, ensuring that changes are documented and any additional costs are reported to the project manager.
Prepare regular progress reports detailing engineering milestones, cost forecasts, and any technical issues that need attention.

Key Requirements:

Experience & Qualifications:
Proven experience as a Mechanical Project Engineer, ideally within the building services sector and experience working on high-security or MOD facilities is highly desirable.
Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering (or a related field).
Experience managing mechanical installations, including HVAC, heating, ventilation, and plumbing (HVAC, MEP systems).
A strong understanding of building services and systems integration, with the ability to manage complex mechanical systems installations on large-scale projects.
Experience with security-cleared projects and knowledge of the MOD's security and technical standards is a bonus, but not essential.
Skills & Competencies:
Strong technical knowledge of mechanical systems, particularly within the context of commercial or public sector building services projects.
Excellent project management skills, including the ability to manage resources, timelines, and budgets effectively.
Strong problem-solving abilities, with the capability to address technical challenges as they arise on site.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work closely with clients, subcontractors, and project teams to achieve project goals.
Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of quality throughout the project lifecycle.
Ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and adapt to changing project requirements and timelines.
Personal Attributes:
Proactive and solution-oriented, with a strong focus on achieving project goals and overcoming challenges.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously.
An ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and leadership when necessary.
Committed to continuous professional development and keeping up to date with the latest trends and technologies in mechanical engineering.
Security Clearance:
Due to the nature of the project, successful candidates will be required to obtain security clearance. This process will involve various background checks.
