Our client, a specialist domestic abuse charity is looking for a Children and Young People’s Groupwork Specialist to join their team.

Synopsis of duties:

  • To ensure that the needs of children and young people you will be working with are met. This will be done by:
  1. Providing group work
  2. Providing workshops
  3. Supporting children to be free from domestic abuse/sexual exploitation
  4. Increase knowledge and understanding of the impact of peer pressure and social media
  5. Providing advocacy and support for young people
  6. Providing holiday activities
  7. Supporting young people to access and maintain education
  8. Identifying behaviours that may put the young person at increased risk of victimisation or offending and delivering interventions to target these.
  9. Working with young people to identify the impact of witnessing domestic abuse and strategies for coping
  10. Working in partnership with Social Services, Education, Health, Police, Community Safety and voluntary organisations etc to ensure that children and young people using our services have the best possible support and opportunities
  11. Signposting young people to services available to support them
  12. Supporting other agencies to provide improved responses to domestic abuse and sexual abuse
  • To represent the needs of young people the wider community.
  • To provide young people with on-going advice and support. This includes group work and workshops in schools
  • Partnership working
  • To establish and maintain links with statutory and voluntary agencies; to promote and support the welfare of children and young people who have experienced domestic abuse. 
  • To develop effective relationships with relevant local organisations to raise the profile of domestic abuse and its impact on families and to publicise the support networks.
  • To advocate for children and young people who have experienced or are experiencing domestic abuse. This includes advocating with several agencies or individuals such as education, families, siblings, Social Care, community groups and Police etc.
  • To work with other local organisations and groups, through partnership, to establish a safe and accessible place for young people to meet in the community and to provide and facilitate support to prevent domestic abuse.
  • Support colleagues and partner agencies, through awareness raising and institutional advocacy, to provide the best possible service for victims of domestic abuse.

  • Undertake risk assessments in liaison with Managers and other team members re: home visits and neutral location meetings.

OUT OF HOURS

  • When on call, staff need to be available for work and have access to a car. You must also be able to drive which means that you must not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol.      
  • Deal with emergencies outside of service hours, which may involve attending refuges outside of service hours.
  • Resolve refuge issues over the phone
  • Provide emergency safety advice to refuge residents
  • Admitting families into refuge accommodation
  • Processing referrals into the services
  • Providing telephone support and safety advice to people affected by domestic abuse
  • Providing telephone support to professionals supporting those affected by domestic abuse
  • Supporting clients to access refuge accommodation.
  • Providing support to and advice to other colleagues out of hours
  • To be able to occasionally attend meetings and events in the evenings and at weekends.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience of working with vulnerable groups.
  • Experience of recognising and
  • responding to safeguarding concerns.
  • Experience of working within a multi-agency and legislative framework
  • Have a good understanding of domestic abuse including the impact of domestic abuse on all members of the family (including victim, perpetrator and children)
  • Have theoretical, practical and procedural knowledge of civil and criminal justice remedies for victims of domestic abuse and their children.
  • Have knowledge of Adult and Child Safeguarding principles, the relevant legislative framework and local and national guidance
