We are recruiting for a Clerk of Works on behalf of our client, Forestry Commission. Forest Research (FR) is the research agency of the Forestry Commission, a world leader in applied forest science and a trusted and recognised provider of expertise, data, products and services for governments and the tree, wood, forest and natural resource sectors. Please explore www.forestresearch.gov.uk to find out more information about the organisation.The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team that manages all of the facilities across the Alice Holt site including offices, laboratories, other facilities and specialist equipment. The team also works closely with the wider Programmes and Estates team which includes health and safety as well as environmental and quality management. The work of the team is essential to the delivery of a wide range of science programmes including critical areas of climate change and the management of tree-related pests and diseases.The current Facilities team is expanding to support the ongoing management of the Alice Holt Research Campus along with a challenging and exciting programme of ongoing investment. This new role of Clerk of Works will report to the Alice Holt Facilities Manager and is part of a small team maintaining an effective and efficient estate portfolio to support the needs of the corporate and scientific business functions, ensuring all buildings and scientific infrastructure are maintained to a high standard. The Clerk of Works will support the safe and compliant operation of the laboratories, buildings, infrastructure and surrounding environs, ensuring they are adequately maintained in accordance with the required standards. The role will both plan and manage reactive and pre-planned maintenance tasks and take a lead in the management of contractors working on site. The successful post holder will also help to plan and manage an ongoing multi-million-pound capital investment programme.What will you be doing?* Working with the facilities manager to develop planned and preventative maintenance programme to ensure the safe and compliant operation of the Alice Holt site.* Instruct and supervise contractors on site to ensure efficient delivery of work activities, including managing Permit to Work activities (PTW), compliance with the technical brief and health and safety legislation.

* Be responsible for the checks on the quality of work on completion.

* Deputise for Facilities Manager as required on the wider estate.

* Undertake contract monitoring inspections, to ensure installations are in accordance with statutory inspections.

* Be conversant with current Health and Safety Legislation.

* Work alongside the wider facilities team in delivering any other new projects which could involve internal liaison with science teams; writing the brief for works; the appointment, management and co-ordination of external service providers; stakeholder liaison.* Undertake occasional travel and overnight stays away from home visiting field stations in the UK.Essential Criteria* Experience of working in a multi-skilled role in technical estate management, supporting and prioritising multiple workstreams at any one time.* Experience of planning, organising and supervising contract work and statutory compliance tasks* A Higher National Qualification in construction, construction management, building services or similar.

* Excellent knowledge of procedures for maintenance and repair of plant, systems, equipment and buildings in relation to core trade skills underpinned by theory and practical experience.
