Trainee / Assistant Planner

We are seeking a Trainee Planner to join our client’s team, responsible for supporting Senior Planners in the production of detailed, logical programmes for all works from tender to completion of projects.

This role is ideal for someone who is looking to start their career in planning within the construction industry, offering extensive training and development opportunities. You will be expected to maintain high professional standards and contribute to the continuous improvement of the business and the planning department.

Day-to-Day of the Role:

  • Learn and utilise Asta software to create new programmes.
  • Produce basic bills of quantities from drawings and convert these into outputs for build periods.
  • Develop logical programmes for projects like house builds or factory units from start to completion, using your own quantified data to assess build knowledge.
  • Link programme logic and identify the critical path.
  • Generate and adjust programme schedules and produce report drop-lines.
  • Monitor the target programme regularly (daily, weekly, monthly) to understand and mitigate risks to the business.
  • Visit sites to produce report drop-lines on live programmes and identify critical activities that are ahead or behind schedule, suggesting measures for programme recovery.
  • Assist with creating tender programmes by reading documents, noting critical information such as start/completion dates, phasing requirements, and form of contract.
  • Engage with the design team, project managers, and site engineers during project handover meetings to ensure best planning practices.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • A keen interest in developing planning knowledge within the construction industry.
  • Basic understanding of construction processes and the ability to read and interpret drawings.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multiple teams.
  • Willingness to learn and use new software and planning techniques.
  • Understanding of or interest in learning about contracts such as JCT, NEC, ECC3.
