Design Manager

As a Design Manager, you will be responsible to the Head of the Design Team, managing individual schemes with the goal of coordinating all technical information between external consultants and internal departments. This role is crucial in supporting various Operating Companies within the organisation, including Structural & Civil Engineering, Construction, Building Services, and Facilities Management.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Manage the design process and ensure all approvals are obtained from various stakeholders and local authorities.
  • Provide technical support to assist during the feasibility stage and throughout the construction phase.
  • Ensure timely issuance of design information to relevant internal and external departments.
  • Coordinate all legal aspects related to various agreements and arrange bonds, guarantees, warranties, and insurances as required.
  • Identify the need for external consultants, agreeing on fees, scope of service, timescales, and deliverability.
  • Control the submission of building regulations and warranty applications.
  • Produce a detailed design programme identifying key dates and a critical path.
  • Support, manage, and develop the internal design team.
  • Carry out quality reviews to ensure the building conforms to the design specification.
  • Coordinate and obtain planning and building control approvals and discharging conditions.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • HNC/HND in Construction & Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Experience working for a main contractor, architecture practice, or in design coordination or architectural technology.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage a small team.
  • Ability to recognise potential issues and implement strategies to overcome them.
  • Proven ability to manage consultants and warranty providers.
  • Effective monitoring and tracking of various elements of the design process.
  • Familiarity with Viewpoint / PIM / Online Drawing Portals.
  • Ability to produce and manage the RFI schedule and process, liaising directly with the design team, engineers, and architects.
  • Experience in value engineering designs provided by the project's design team.
  • Proficiency in using AutoCAD, BIM, and hosting design team meetings.
  • Proactive attitude and a strong commitment to continuous improvement.
