A leading organisation, specialising in supplying a wide range of steel plates for industries such as construction, bridges, and renewable energy sectors, is seeking a Project Engineer (Mechanical Biased) to join its Engineering and Maintenance Department. Following a period of growth and success, this position offers an exciting opportunity for a dedicated professional with a focus on continuous improvement and proactive problem-solving.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Project Engineering Manager, the Project Engineer is responsible for supporting reactive and planned maintenance activities. The role involves addressing mechanical faults, carrying out repairs, managing subcontractors, and ensuring equipment reliability. Additionally, the Project Engineer will identify and manage CAPEX and OPEX projects, prepare technical specifications, and implement solutions to improve operational efficiency and safety.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management and Capital Investment

  • Identify and propose CAPEX and OPEX projects aligned with strategic goals.
  • Develop technical specifications for engineering projects.
  • Manage projects from inception to completion, including design, tendering, vendor management, financial reporting, and quality control.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, company policies, and safety standards.
  • Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration and oversee project documentation, training, and handover.

Engineering Maintenance

  • Respond promptly to mechanical breakdowns and issues across the plant.
  • Conduct fault-finding, root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions to improve reliability.
  • Carry out planned maintenance, servicing, and installations.
  • Liaise with external agencies, suppliers, and manufacturers for technical support.
  • Assist in audits, plant inspections, and risk assessments.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance strategies in coordination with the Engineering and Maintenance Manager.

Health, Safety, and Environmental (SHE)

  • Conduct risk assessments and train others in workplace safety procedures.
  • Oversee contractor health and safety during on-site activities.
  • Develop and implement Safe Systems of Work in alignment with company policies.
  • Promote compliance with safety standards and systems.

Continuous Improvement

  • Lead and support quality, lean, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to standard operating procedures.
  • Track and analyse performance data to drive operational enhancements.
  • Foster interdepartmental collaboration and promote a culture of continuous improvement.

Autonomy and Accountability

  • Approve CAPEX and OPEX activities in line with organisational policies.
  • Identify opportunities for operational improvements and collaborate with leadership to implement solutions.

Additional Duties

  • Support the training and development of team members.
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested by management.
Person Specification

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Engineering qualification (minimum HNC or equivalent).
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical faults independently.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in technical reporting and effective communication.
  • Innovative and cost-conscious approach to problem-solving.
  • Competence in MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Proactive mindset with a focus on continuous improvement and collaboration.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in heavy engineering or manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with PLC systems and control engineering.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems.
  • Competence in AutoCAD, Inventor, or similar design software.
  • Experience managing contractor activities and preparing documentation.
  • PRINCE2 or equivalent project management qualification.
  • Understanding of CDM regulations.
  • Full driving licence.
