Central Employment are proudly representing a leading engineering firm, based in Gateshead, by recruiting a permanent Mechanical Maintenance Technician to join their team. If you are an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Technician, with a background in heavy engineering, apply now for an immediate response!A leading industrial company is seeking an experienced Maintenance Technician (Mechanical Bias or Multi-Skilled) to join their expanding Maintenance Department. The company specializes in the production of steel plates for various sectors, including construction, bridges, and renewable energy. Following continued success and record-breaking results, they are looking to grow their team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on plant machinery and equipment, both proactively (e.g., Preventative Maintenance) and reactively (e.g., breakdowns).
  • Support the installation, commissioning, and upgrade of mechanical equipment.
  • Ensure safe working practices at all times, adhering to health and safety protocols, procedures, permits, and safety systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and equipment failures, identifying root causes and communicating them to relevant teams.
  • Collaborate effectively with the maintenance team and external contractors to ensure minimal equipment downtime.
  • Handover any incomplete tasks at the end of each shift to ensure continuity.
  • Assist with safety improvements and maintain compliance with company policies.
  • Record all maintenance activities and refer to technical manuals, drawings, and records as needed.

Person Specification:

  • Educated to ONC/OND/HND/HNC/NVQIII or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or Maintenance Engineering.
  • Proven experience in mechanical fault-finding, maintenance, and repair in heavy engineering environments.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, and mechanical components in large machinery.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively according to workload.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work unsupervised or as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work at height and adhere to strict safety standards.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with large rotating equipment, pumps, compressors, and gearboxes.
  • Knowledge of welding and fabrication techniques.
  • Familiarity with crane maintenance and lifting equipment.
  • Experience with condition monitoring, vibration analysis, or thermography.
  • Ability to operate MEWPs or forklifts.
