SENIOR UX & SERVICE DESIGNER - 13 MONTH CONTRACT - INSIDE IR35

Lorien leading Public Sector Client is looking a highly experienced Senior UX and Service Designer on an initial 13 month contract, running through to April next week.

We are looking for a Senior UX & Service Designer with backend development expertise to join our team. This role brings together user-centred design, service strategy, and technical implementation to create intuitive, accessible, and scalable digital services.

You will play a key role in designing, researching, and developing services that meet the needs of users while ensuring they are technically robust and scalable. You will work closely with stakeholders, researchers, designers, and engineers to shape digital experiences that align with the Digital Scotland Service Standard and deliver real impact.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who can balance design thinking with hands-on development, ensuring seamless integration between user interfaces and backend systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

User-Centred Design & Research: * Lead UX, UI, and service design, ensuring a seamless and engaging experience for users.* Conduct user research to understand needs, behaviours, and barriers, translating insights into meaningful design solutions.* Create wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs that align with accessibility and usability standards.* Advocate for inclusive and evidence-based design decisions, ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.1 and government standards.

Service Ownership & Digital Strategy:* Define and own the end-to-end service design, ensuring smooth interaction between frontend and backend services.* Develop and maintain design systems to ensure consistency across digital platforms.* Work closely with stakeholders, developers, and policymakers to align services with strategic goals.* Apply agile methodologies to deliver iterative service improvements.

Backend Development & Technical Integration:* Develop and maintain backend systems and APIs to support seamless user interactions.* Work with Node.js, Python, or similar technologies to build secure and scalable solutions.* Ensure integration between databases, microservices, and frontend applications.* Implement automated workflows and CI/CD pipelines for efficient deployment.* Apply best practices in data security, information governance, and API management.

Data-Driven Decision Making:* Use data analytics and performance metrics to evaluate and refine services.* Conduct usability testing, A/B testing, and heatmap analysis to improve digital interactions.* Guide teams in making evidence-based product decisions that improve user experience.

Collaboration & Agile Delivery:* Work with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and implement services.* Engage with public sector leaders, digital teams, and policy makers to define and refine service offerings.* Act as a bridge between designers, researchers, and engineers, ensuring alignment between technical and user experience goals.* Lead design critiques, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions to enhance team capabilities.
