The Role
To carry out the functions of a teacher in accordance with the Teacher Standards, the School Traits, staff dispositions and the School Staff competences contained in the Person Specification.
To provide high-quality, personalised education to pupils who attend the School Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). The role requires the teacher to support the design of, and deliver a curriculum that is accessible, engaging, and supportive, helping pupils overcome challenges, build self-confidence, and develop positive attitudes toward learning. The teacher will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure a holistic approach to each pupil’s development and reintegration into mainstream education or further suitable provisions, where appropriate.
Children attending the School will have a wide range of needs, and often very complex needs, which every teacher will strive to meet. The nature of a PRU is often unpredictable and therefore adaptability is a key trait that enables teachers to fulfil their purpose, along with a willingness to understand the needs of each learner, work as a team and have the flexibility to manage varying lengths of placement, effectively.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching And Learning:
- Foster a positive and inclusive classroom environment that prioritises pupil well-being, resilience, and emotional regulation.
- In accordance with schemes of work, plan, deliver and review lessons which are appropriate to the age and ability of the students so as to facilitate progression in students’ learning.
- Design and produce teaching materials and resources which are appropriate to age and ability.
- Manage the classroom and teaching equipment, to create a positive learning environment which makes effective use of available resources.
- Implement all school policies with specific regard to registration, student absence, safeguarding and their principles of Ready, Safe, Respect.
- Teach more than one subject
Relational Practise
- Actively form meaningful relationships with vulnerable young people.
- Use trauma-informed and restorative approaches to manage behaviour, addressing challenging situations with empathy and understanding.
- When necessary, follow or implement individual behaviour plans and tailor interventions that support positive behaviour change.
- Develop and maintain classroom routines that create a safe, structured, and consistent environment for pupils.
- Actively seek ways of developing lifelong learning habits with young people to improve perception and experiences of mainstream school.
- Actively support pupils’ emotional and social development, recognizing and addressing the range of pupils needs through targeted interventions.
- Act as a key worker for designated pupils, offering additional support and mentoring as needed.
- Work closely with the pastoral team to monitor each pupil’s well-being and respond effectively to any issues or concerns.
Assessment And Monitoring:
- Assess, record and report on the development, progress and attainment of the learners.
- Facilitate and ensure the general progress and well-being of all learners within assigned groups.
- In line with school policy, conduct ongoing formative assessments to track pupil progress in both academic and personal development areas.
- Maintain detailed records and prepare progress reports to inform future planning and interventions.
- Review and adapt teaching strategies and interventions regularly based on assessment outcomes and pupil feedback.
Skills and Qualifications
- Honours degree or equivalent
- Qualified Teacher Status
- Experience of working with vulnerable young people in a mainstream or specialist setting
- Working with SEND or working with primary pupils (KS1 or KS2)
- An ability to form trusting, positive relationships with young people and use this to support in times of need/crisis
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working in partnership with pupils, parents, colleagues and the ability to develop strong relationships
- An ability to actively addresses SEMH needs whilst delivering lessons/teaching/with students.
- Desire and willingness to actively seek out opportunities to positively engage with students.
- An ability to set tasks that challenge and engage pupils or families with a balance of support and challenge and independence
