Education and Family Support Advisor (non-teaching)

Location: Glastonbury

Salary: Grade 12 (£22,746 - £25,501, pro rata)

Hours: 35 hours per week, term time only

This is an exciting role and one that will enable the successful candidate help support the students and schools of Mendip that are experiencing challenge. 

The Role

  • To support their students and families to engage with education.
  • To lead on the monitoring and analysing of attendance data and work with students, families and the local authority to improve school attendance.

Key Responsibilities

Attendance Duties:

  • Monitor accurate pupil attendance and lateness records on a daily basis.
  • Follow up on pupil absence and lateness by telephone or other means, on a daily basis.
  • To ensure all unexplained absences are accounted for, seek the reason for absence via telephone or letter.
  • To conduct home welfare visits when a student is absent and school is unable to contact a parent, or when a student has been absent for over 5 days or as required by SLT.
  • To check the accuracy and correct coding on registers.
  • To follow the Pupil Attendance and Absence Policy and send out letters as required.
  • Identify individuals and/or groups of pupils that require additional support to improve their levels of attendance and punctuality.
  • Identify and implement intervention strategies to address poor attendance and celebrate good attendance and improvements in attendance. 
  • Liaise with outside agencies, parents/carers, social services, other schools and/or organisations in relation to information on pupil attendance and punctuality.
  • Establish and maintain good relationships with all pupils, parents/carers, colleagues and other professionals.
  • Provide accurate and timely attendance and lateness reports to relevant colleagues including the Headteacher and the Designated Senior Leader Responsible for Attendance.
  • Completion of accurate statistical returns regarding pupil attendance and punctuality as required by the school, local authority and DfE.
  • Responsible for ensuring data quality and as such the integrity of management information through the proper use and safekeeping of data and record systems both manual and computerised.
  • Complete Attendance Action Plan meetings and Attendance Contracts with parents and pupils when there are concerns about pupil attendance. Hold review meetings to check on progress.

Wider Duties:

  • Provide ‘early help’ in the form of advice and guidance to parents in times of difficulty. 
  • Hold ‘Team Around the Child’ meetings to identify barriers to engagement with education
  • Signpost families to appropriate support (with support from Designated Safeguarding Lead, as appropriate).
  • Support the integration of new students and reintegration of students to new schools by attending meetings, as required. 
  • Supporting and checking on pupils who are out of school for any reason, for example, suspension or attending Alternative Provision. Assist in Quality Assurance of Alternative Provision by conducting visits.
  • To create short pieces of work then help to build the capacity of families facing challenge
  • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people in accordance with the school’s Child Protection and Safeguarding and policy.
  • Undertake professional development activities to enhance personal development and job performance, through the provision of training and mentoring.
  • Attend relevant school meetings, as well as any other meetings associated with this role.
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by the Headteacher.

Supervision and Management of People:

  • The postholder will often be required to work without direct supervision. Supervision will be present where necessary.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Excellent numeracy/literacy skills
  • A levels  or equivalent qualification
  • Experience of working with or for young people in some capacity
  • Liaising with families and professional agencies
  • Experience of managing spreadsheets and data
  • Effective use of ICT to support learning
  • An ability to form trusting, positive relationships with young people and families
  • An ability to use positive relationship to caringly support young people or families in low/negative crisis
  • An ability to uses positive relationship to caringly support young people or families in angry/violent crisis
  • Be an active and positive member of a staff team
  • Be aspirational for student’s academic and socio-emotional progress
