Job Description


We are looking for an experienced Site Engineer to join our team on a large highways project based in Gloucester. This role is a key part of a major infrastructure initiative, and you will be responsible for the technical and engineering oversight on site. The contract is for a 6-12 month duration, working inside IR35.
As a Site Engineer, you will ensure that construction work is carried out in line with specifications, safety standards, and within the designated timelines. Highways experience is crucial for this position.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Site Supervision: Manage daily operations on-site, ensuring compliance with designs, specifications, and safety standards.
  • Setting Out: Carry out accurate setting out for roads, drainage, structures, and other related works using modern surveying equipment (e.g., GPS, total stations).
  • Quality Control: Ensure works meet the required technical and quality standards through regular inspections.
  • Coordination: Liaise with subcontractors, designers, and the project management team to ensure smooth progress on site.
  • Health & Safety: Ensure that all activities are carried out in accordance with the project's health and safety plan.
  • Problem Solving: Resolve any design or construction issues on site, escalating complex problems when necessary.
  • Documentation: Keep up-to-date site records, including as-built drawings, progress reports, and quality assurance paperwork.
  • Compliance: Ensure adherence to all environmental, safety, and traffic management regulations on site.


Required Experience & Qualifications:

  • Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience in site engineering on highways or large civil engineering projects.
  • Technical Skills: Proficient in setting out and surveying, with experience using GPS, total stations, and AutoCAD.
  • Highways Knowledge: Strong understanding of highways construction techniques, including earthworks, drainage, and surfacing.
  • Qualifications: Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering.
  • Certifications: CSCS card is required; SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) is preferred.
  • Software Proficiency: Skilled in using AutoCAD, as well as other relevant design and project management tools.
  • IR35: The role operates inside IR35, meaning engagement through PAYE or an umbrella company is necessary.
