Are you passionate about making a difference in your community? South Gloucestershire Council is looking for a dedicated and proactive Housing Assistant to join our Housing Access Team. This role is key in providing vital support to vulnerable individuals and families who are facing housing challenges.

About the Role:

As a Housing Assistant, you will be responsible for setting up emergency accommodation placements, assisting with Housing Benefit forms, managing rent accounts, and ensuring that individuals access suitable accommodation according to statutory duties under the Housing Act 1996. You'll also have the opportunity to work closely with vulnerable groups and contribute to improving housing solutions within the community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Arrange placements into emergency accommodation and properties managed by SG Homes.
  • Process housing-related documents, including Housing Benefit forms and rent accounts.
  • Work with private sector landlords and assist in facilitating housing access.
  • Maintain accurate records of all placements and monitor the payment of charges.
  • Offer support to customers, including those in difficult housing situations, and help resolve any issues that may arise.
About You:
  • Qualifications: NVQ 3 (or equivalent) in housing or related fields, or relevant experience.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a housing or homelessness-related role is preferred.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of housing legislation, particularly Housing Act 1996, and the statutory duties to accommodate.
  • Skills: Strong IT skills, problem-solving abilities, and excellent communication skills.
  • Personal Qualities: Compassionate, empathetic, and able to engage with customers sensitively, even in challenging situations.
