Web Hosting Technician

Location: Gloucester (This is a hybrid role and based on minimum of 4 days at the office location in Gloucester)

The Role

The company are looking for an experienced and motivated Web Hosting Technician to join their growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for web hosting, server management, and technical problem-solving, who is keen to advance their career in a dynamic and supportive environment.

You will play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of their hosting infrastructure and providing technical support for web hosting-related issues. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of web hosting platforms, server administration, and a customer-centric approach.

This is a hybrid role and based on minimum of 4 days at the office location in Gloucester.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Web Hosting Support: Provide first-line support for hosting-related issues, troubleshooting website, server, and database errors, including PHP-related issues.
  • cPanel & WHM Management: Administer cPanel & WHM environments, creating and managing user accounts, databases, and server configurations.
  • Server Management: Assist in the configuration, optimisation, and maintenance of Linux servers, including Digital Ocean managed systems and other web hosting environments.
  • Software Installation and Upgrades: Install and upgrade hosting-related software, ensuring compliance with licensing and security standards.
  • Security & Compliance: Implement and maintain web hosting security protocols, including managing firewalls, SSL certificates, and other security measures.
  • Domain & DNS Management: Oversee domain registration, DNS configuration, and troubleshooting to ensure seamless website operation.
  • Help Desk Management: Use WHMCS to monitor and manage hosting-related service requests, ensuring high levels of client satisfaction.
  • WordPress Maintenance: Perform WordPress maintenance, including monitoring updates, troubleshooting errors, and assisting with website migrations.
  • Backup Management: Manage and monitor website and server backups, ensuring data integrity and swift recovery in case of failures.
  • IT Project Support: Support IT projects related to hosting infrastructure, including server migrations, upgrades, and new service implementations.

Skills and Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • Education: At least 2 years of experience in web hosting or IT support, with a good academic record in STEM subjects or an equivalent IT qualification.

Essential Skills:

  • Strong understanding of web hosting platforms (cPanel, WHM, and similar).
  • Proficient in Linux server management and basic scripting.
  • Experience with PHP troubleshooting and error resolution.
  • Familiarity with DNS management, SSL certificates, and server configurations.
  • Basic understanding of IT security principles, including firewall management.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of WordPress backend and experience with customising WordPress websites.
  • Familiarity with SQL databases and basic scripting languages.
  • Experience with digital ocean hosting platforms and cloud-based hosting services.
  • Experience with Microsoft Entra (formerly Azure Active Directory) and other networking concepts (DHCP, DNS, TCP/IP).
